It's about all I've been listening to, and it is quickly replacing "Flesh and Bone" as my favorite drive music. Having heard most of the songs live a couple of times, I have to agree with the post that said the production only enhanced the songs. That syncopated mandolin chop in the "layered" beginning of the title cut grabbed me, much the same as the introduction to "Scorpion" always has. And being a John Gorka fan, I was quite taken with the "Promise Me" waltz. Lucy was playing "Turn the Lights Back On" live for the last couple years. I heard it soon after she finished writing it, before she even had a title, while she was introducing it as a "Positively 4th Street"-type of song. When I saw her last, before the CD was available, I asked her whether she put it on the disc and she said she had, and confided, "It's a real rocker." That's one thing about this disc. Not to diminish Shawn Colvin's effort as Lucy's first producer, but Ben Wittman has put together a recording with an edge that should put Lucy on a lot of playlists. That, combined with her Cry3 effort and the ensuing exposure, should do more for her career than anything else so far. A word about the cover art. It's art, not real life. I think the music speaks much more loudly than the cover. I'd like to meet some of the people on this list, too. I don't get to New York, but I will be at Lucy's shows with Duke Zevine at the Barns of Wolf Trap and the Tin Angel March 25 and 26 with my daughter, also a big Lucy fan. Anyone else going? - -- Jay Votel ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 09 Mar 1999 13:14:31 -0500 From: "L. Davis" Subject: [lucy-list] TYN cover art As many others have remarked, the music is yet another leap forward for Lucy in terms of musicality and production. Certainly quibbling about the cover art is a minor concern for those of us among the converted. I guess the only reason why I and others would even bring up the subject is that, rightly or wrongly, in the vastness of the music industry, where many consumers in the stores are making decisions relatively blindly, unfortunately cover art can play a role in what someone might buy. This is of course less of a problem in the area of folk music, where many customers probably already know exactly what they want going in. It really is only an issue for the less committed, more impulsive purchaser, but I will admit that I have on occasion been put off by cover artwork that I did not find appealing. In expanding the audience for an artist, such details can sometimes be more significant than perhaps they should be. Then again, as I have said before, what do I know about marketing an album? I would be interested in the impressions of the artwork someone might have who did not know and had not seen Lucy before-- it might get a much different response than I think it has received here. His first CD, "The Strong in Spirit," is one of my all-time favorites, featuring angelic harmonies by you-know-who. The show was great (and Harvey can back me up on this one -- it's nice having partners in crime these days) and I highly recommend the CD. >> Ron knows exactly of what he speaketh. Hugh was absolutely terrific. After the show I bought 'The Strong in Spirit' because a number of the songs which Hugh performed and which I particularly loved were on the cd (and also because I have learned that when Ron tells you that an album is one of his favorites of all time you just buy it-period). In any event, not only do I agree that the album is amazing, but (as Jeff G also noted) Lucy is all over it. If I had never heard her sing before, just listening to her on 'Let Me Fall in Love Before the Spring Comes' and "Leather and Lace" would make me fall in love with her singing. I sometimes think that all one needs to do to have a stellar record collection is to buy every cd Lucy has appeared on. I had missed this one, and it is absolutely worth having. Please let me know if there are problems ... and thanks! A quick question for those already pre-purchased and have received "TYN" from Red House..... Maybe I am just toooo anxious, but I ordered TYN by phone, last Wednesday, (3/3), at lunchtime, (1-2 pm). I requested the "first class" shipping. They,(Red House), are in St. Paul, Minn., (of course!), and I live in Central Ohio. Tomorrow will be one week since I placed the order. Question: How long did it take for those of you list-ers, who already have the CD, (and ordered it from R.H.), to receive it, after placing the order??!! THANKS!!! Brian M. The show airs from 8-11AM. I was told that Lucy will be interviewed by John Platt in the studio, play a few live cuts and that they will also play some things from the new album. What a great way to start a day. I had never heard the song before. Beautiful song, great voice, terrific performance. When I heard it on cd for the first time, and there was Lucy layering in this outrageously beautiful harmony vocal, it was as if the song had developed a life of its own. The same exact thing happened when I first heard Richard Shindell do Easy Street. I loved the song, bought the cd, and sure enough, here comes Lucy to add in these new facets to an already beautifully done song. She is incredible.
