Putting faces together with their posts and seeing friends is always a neat thing. As has been noted, the show was great. As a matter of fact, these three are incapable of putting on a show that is not great. As others have mentioned, the three Crypeople each did their own mini-set, which was followed by a Cry 3 set. Although I agree that the sets were all a bit too abbreviated, they were all just wonderful. Watching the individual brilliance of Lucy, Dar, and Richard as they did their own material in succession was a real treat. I would really love to see them do the same thing at Falcon Ridge this summer. Lucy was particularly awesome. She just somehow gets stronger and stronger every time I see her. There were points in her set where her voice was just so powerful that I don't think that I could have moved if I wanted to. The honesty and emotion and intensity which she infuses into her singing is just breathtaking. As has been noted, the Crypeople ended with a song called Green(er?) Pastures. I hope they keep doing this song for the upcoming shows. I didn't particularly love the song itself, but the power and blend of the voices is really something that you do not want to miss. This really is a supergroup by almost any definition one can imagine. Finally, DO NOT MISS CRY 3 ON ANY MOUNTAIN STAGE REPEAT YOU CAN FIND ( it's on WFUV in NY today from 6:00 pm- 8:00 pm) It is a very memorable session. All three are just terrific. Lucy sings a version of Ten Year Night which will just blow you away. Buddy and Julie Miller are on the show as well. They do By Way of Sorrow and the above mentioned Green(er?) Pastures with Cry 3. Awesome. Richard does a great version of Abuelita, as does Dar on February. It really is hard to get too much of this music isn't it? I'm going to take a Valium now and go take a nap.... However, in my neck of the woods, Lucy will be at Concerts under the Stars in Upper Merion PA on June 20th ($6, lawn seating, non-smoking, not crowded, great venue). Cry Cry Cry will be appearing at Philadelphia Folk Festival the weekend before Labor Day. That's a double WOOHOO!!!!! In 1998, I saw Lucy in a good concert at Emelin Theater in Mamaroneck, NY. This was just after Shawn Colvin had won a Grammy. Lucy talked a fair amount about Shawn Colvin. Lucy and Shawn were performing together at one point, even doing wedding gigs. They were making quite a name for themselves and were approached for a record contract. Lucy said "What me? I'm not going to have a singing career!" Shawn said "So it's OK if I pursue this?" and Lucy said "Sure..." And Lucy went off to college, medical school, eventually a Phd in Psychology and a career in therapy. As background, Lucy's Dad is a famous mathematician, Irving Kaplansky. My personal feeling is that she wanted to live up to his expectations. The song "Flesh and Bone" explores some of the feelings. Shawn Colvin kept bugging her to get back in the music business and did produce Lucy's first CD "The Tide". Lucy had nothing but good things to say about Shawn that night. I did sense a feeling of regret, how things might have been different... it might have been Shawn and Lucy winning a Grammy. But I think Lucy knows it was entirely her decision about how to live her life. I rejoice that Lucy has come back to the music world she ornaments so brilliantly. Hoang" Subject: [lucy-list] things to avoid when shopping for a psychotherapist Hello folks, this has nothing to do with the subject heading, sorry! Has anyone heard LucyK do Richard Shindell's Mary Magdalen? I heard her do it live last fall, and the more I listen to it, the more I prefer it to Dar's version off the Cry3 cd. Often, people refer to Lucy's voice as having an "edge". I agree. For Mary Magdalen, I like the picture of Mary with an edge. Dar's vocals make me feel sympathy for Mary... which isn't a bad thing... but I like the feeling that Lucy's version gives better... that of a woman scorned and of a love that was bittersweet. Anyways, like you all, I can't get enough of Ten Year Night. I liked the Tide more than I did Flesh and Bone, and I prefered her covers to her own material. But after this new cd, she's convinced me. Her writing is brilliant, and the music.. sublime. One last thing, does anyone know the story behind For Once In Your Life? I pretty much said the same thing, i.e., her version is somehow more honest & heartfelt than Dar's. Oddly enough, Dar's rather flat reading of the song is evident when performed live as well. Having said that, i think Dar Williams is an exceptional talent: i just prefer Lucy's version of Mary Magdalene to Dar's. And having said *that*, you haven't lived until you've heard Richard play it live. There are few times in life when an artist can cause goosebumps and tears simultaneously. this is one of those times. - -e. ************************************************************************* To unsubscribe from the Lucy Kaplansky mailing list, send a a message to majordomo@smoe.org with the text "unsubscribe lucy-list" in the body of the message. ************************************************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 07 Mar 1999 23:31:16 -0500 From: Paul Rafanello Subject: [lucy-list] For Once In Your Life/MM At 10:57 PM 3/7/99 -0500, Tawni T.
