Why this mania to name ourselves?? I surely agree. In fact, wasn't Carol interviewing Richard Shindell when the subject of the RS-list came up? He wanted to know if we called ourselves "Dickheads". Occasionally, group-names just happen. Unfortunately it doesn't have the rich history of RonG's interesting post from the last digest (But I can tell you some wonderful stories about guys like Tom Rush, John Sebastian--oh, never mind) but here goes. I sought out Flesh and Bone based on the nice things people said about Lucy on the Dar List. So I went to Borders, found the F&B CD, popped it into the car CD player on the way home and I was hooked instantly from the opening chords of Scorpion. A week later, I read somewhere that Lucy was playing at the Rosendale Cafe in upstate New York. So I planned a weekend getaway to--you guessed it--Rosendale, dragging my wife and daughter to this nothing town to see this singer/songwriter with the less than Hollywood name. The Rosendale Cafe turned out to be a little store front vegetarian restaurant that could jam 60 people in if it tried. Which it did of course. But we got there an hour early and shared a table with another couple right in front. Following our dinner of mashed yeast and red bean surprise (???), Lucy came out and WOW, it was amazing. I requested "Guineviere" since it was my daughter's favorite song (still is) from the CD, and Lucy graciously said yes, announcing that "This is for Adriana--what a beautiful name." Afterward, Lucy signed Adriana's copy of F&B--it now hangs on the wall of her bedroom--and she and Rick couldn't have been more warm and friendly. She was also genuinely flattered that we had driven all the way from the east end of Long Island to see her in this tiny joint. So that's the kind of woman Lucy is and what extent her fans will go to, to see her. And it's also why she has a Discussion List of her own now, despite those who pooh-poohed the idea at the outset (some of us know who). Long live Lucy, one the most fabulous people in the music biz. And Ten Year Night has my vote for Album of the Year, edging out Lynn Miles' Night in a Strange Town. I don't think anything will knock Lucy out of first place either, even though it's only March. Having said that, it should be noted that David Massengill is a member of the family which owns the Massengill Company, best known for its feminine hygeine products (the bare truth; as Casey Stengel used to say, you can look it up), so you must take any story about his having worked as a dishwasher in NYC with a mighty big chunk of salt and several other spices of your choice. This is not meant as a "dis" of David or his music, and I would strongly echo the advice that if you get a chance to hear him perform, by all means take it. ************************************************************************* To unsubscribe from the Lucy Kaplansky mailing list, send a a message to majordomo@smoe.org with the text "unsubscribe lucy-list" in the body of the message. ************************************************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Mar 1999 10:15:25 -0500 From: Rachel_Ladutke@aporter.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Lucy's New CD--It is outstanding! Lucy is singing better than ever. But what is up with her makeup in the cover photos?! I'm not sure I would have recognized her if her name hadn't been on the cover. I know stylists have to make a living too, but that is some _heavy_ makeup. I should point out here that I'm one of those who find Lucy tremendously attractive onstage and off. The makeup she usually wears is very becoming and sexy. I was surprised to read in her last e-mail Update that she usually has doubts about how her hair looks. I think she has fabulous hair, it's one of her best features. Well, nothing like a superficial and possibly inappropriate (how Lucy looks is her business) post to get things rolling! Happy listening, Chris F. ************************************************************************* To unsubscribe from the Lucy Kaplansky mailing list, send a a message to majordomo@smoe.org with the text "unsubscribe lucy-list" in the body of the message. ************************************************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Mar 1999 12:06:21 EST From: SpecGlobal@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] Re: My Name Joe/Baez/Lucy's Cover In a message dated 3/5/99 9:38:45 AM Eastern Standard Time, DoctorJoeE@aol.com writes: << David Massengill is a member of the family which owns the Massengill Company, ........<>...... so you must take any story about his having worked as a dishwasher in NYC with a mighty big chunk of salt ....>> True about the family connection, but it is also true that David really was a dishwasher in NYC who needed to work so that he could pay for his food and rent. I have also heard him say that all of the characters in the story are (were) real people. I have not heard him be specific (nor have I heard him asked) whether or not 'the bust' actually took place (nor do I think it really matters too much). Of course, he is "the white trash from Tennessee" in the song. In this connection, David also tells a story about winning some sort of a singer/songwriter open mike contest at a club in Greenwich Village. Although the details are a bit hazy (for me that is -not for David), his prize was to open for Joan Baez (who was the reigning queen of folk music) at whichever club the contest was held. After the show, Joan was a bit surprised to learn that this wonderful talent who had just won the contest was headed back to his 'day job' of washing the dishes. Joan asked David if he could get her into the kitchen for a night to help him. Besides the fact that David thought that Baez was just being polite or curious (at best) about all of this, he arranged for her to help him at work. Not only did she show up right on time, but, to David's amazement, she stayed all night long and really put a genuine effort into washing the dishes with him and the other characters in My Name Joe. <<....and I would strongly echo the advice that if you get a chance to hear him perform, by all means take it. >> I never really found My Name Joe to be that great of a song until I heard David tell his stories (David's storytelling abilities rival his musical ones) and hear him sing the song. I believe that he was a good friend of Lucy's in the early days of her career and that is likely why the song is on The Tide. DoctorJoeE is right though, see him if you get the chance. Although Lucy sounds terrific and does a beautiful job with this song, it has never been one of my personal favorites. I have always been very partial to the originals that she and/or she and Rick Litvin have written. I am not a purist who needs to have the singer also write the song, but, even though I find myself enjoying Lucy's covers tremendously, the emotion and power that she brings to, and elicits from, the originals is, at least for me, truly where her magic is at its most powerful. Even my father ,who drove 14 hours in one day, partly through a blizzard, to bring me home agreed. Excellent show! Everyone got to perform solo, and then the group played at the end. Buddy and Julie Miller were there, (Julie wrote By Way of Sorrow, which Cry, Cry, Cry performed and was, in my opinin, the best song of the evening.) Lucy sang backup during a Miller set, the Millers played with them on a song, and there were so many other pairings that I can't even remember. Wonderful, wonderful show. By the way, isn't that ("Silly Little Introduction") the name of a Paul McCartney song? I'm in East Lansing, Michigan. I discovered Lucy by way of a friend a couple of years ago (although I had also seen her name on numerous CDs in my collection) and for the longest time owned only "Flesh and Bone." I finally got around to buying "The Tide" a few weeks ago and shortly before that, I received a promotional advance of "Ten Year Night" from Red House Records. I believe that "Ten Year Night" is her finest effort to date, and much of that has to do with the fact that she's featured her own writing. I am a volunteer booking manager for the local folk club, the Ten Pound Fiddle Coffeehouse, and it so happens that Lucy will be gracing our stage next Friday night (March 12). So, if any of you are within driving distance to East Lansing and are interested in coming, please contact me and I'll give you the details. Those of you who may already plan to be there, please feel free to say hello -- I'll be the dork emceeing the program. As many of you might know, several years ago, Cliff Eberhardt, Patty Larkin, John Gorka and Cheryl Wheeler formed a CCC-esque group that toured together on and off for a couple of years, and they billed the tour "On a Winter's Night." And Cheryl used to joke onstage that they were going to add David to the tour and change the name to "On a Summer's Eve." You can't make this stuff up.
