He tells us that he used to be a dish washer in a restaurant in NYC, and worked along with many illegal immigrants. Since he is a story teller, whether this "Joe" character really existed is unknown to us. It's a good story though. If you ever get a chance to see David perform, by all means do so. Inquiring minds want to know! #2: my name joe is a david massengill song. i saw him at a folk festival and he said that song is based on something that actually happened when he worked at a restaurant -- he's the "white trash from tennessee" who said "my name joe". he's great in his own right. jessica - -------------------------------jns4470@is.nyu.edu---------------------------- "A lesson learned, a loving god, and things in their own time: in nothing more do I trust." --Emily Saliers - ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ************************************************************************* To unsubscribe from the Lucy Kaplansky mailing list, send a a message to majordomo@smoe.org with the text "unsubscribe lucy-list" in the body of the message. ************************************************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 05 Mar 1999 02:54:54 -0500 From: Jeff Gilson Subject: [lucy-list] Me Well, that's what this post is about, I figured I'd just come out and say it. :-} I said I'd be here within hours of the announcement, and I was subscribed right away, but getting time to post this week has been an adventure. So, anyway. Confession time. The first time I saw Lucy, I thought, "Oh, nice voice, ho humm." In retrospect, I think she must have been having an off night. It was April 1996, and she was opening for Bill Morrissey at the Lively Lucy's Folk Festival (where she will be appearing this year on April 25, more details to follow) at Skidmore College. Anyway, the point is, it took me two years to really listen to her again and realize just how wonderful her voice is. Beyond that, it took me a while to get from just playing "Greivous Angel," "Peace, Love and Understanding," and "My Name Joe" during my weekly radio shows. And, naturally, I kick myself every time I think about it. Heck, I was about to look seriously into starting a Lucy list when Bill M. posted that one was in the making. Full out fan. And I'm one of the lucky SOBs who got a copy of Ten Year Night before it was available anywhere. I don't say this to make people suffer, just as an indication of where my feelings for Lucy have gone in the last three years.
