Ya know,

I was thinking about this last night. Why this mania to name ourselves??  No
one really does outside of sports -- and not all team fans name themselves
either.  Down here, Tampa Bay fans have no nickname.  --- (All right, no one
from up north suggest "losers" OK??  ;-) ....

Anyway, as I was saying outside of a few sports enthusiasts no one has
nicknames except "Deadheads", "Parrotheads" (Jimmy Buffet fans), and Trekkies.

Think about it -- is that a list you want to add your name to???  If so, I
suggest you go out right now and get some Vulcan ears and a big wedge of
cheese to wear on your head.....   ;-)

I prefer to just be a "Lucy List Member". Remember by naming yourself, you're
committing to some weird ritual out in the parking lot before any Lucy show.
You'd have to sell homemade T-shirts and partake of excessive amounts of
Lucy's favorite libation -- whatever that is..... (and what if it's something
really horrible -- like "Mickey's Big Mouths" or something????)  <g>

  So there were more than a few Dar Listers at the early CryCryCry show at New
York's Bottom Line show last nite.  A very interesting evening, since it was
tacitly billed as a "special" CryCry Cry show in that Dar, Richard and Lucy
were doing solo acts, with a smattering of CryCryCry to follow.  Well, the
solo acts weren't as long as I would have liked but thoroughly enjoyable
nonetheless.  Some observations:  Lucy's performances of her new Ten Year
Night songs are absolutely delicious--replete with all the quirky phrasing,
odd facial manuevers and trans-like, ethereal posing.  When she did For Once
In Your Life, I admit tears rolled down my cheeks and I could see her welling
up as well.  That alone was worth the price of admission.
  Also worth the ticket price was Richard's incredible rendition of Beyond The
Iron Gate, which he sang with pure gusto and genuine feeling.  Ditto for Next
Best Western and Abuelita, the finest performances of those songs I think I've
ever seen.  Richard just keeps getting better, and better, and better.  Just
awesome.
  Now Dar...well, it is clear to me that Dar is showing the most rust when it
comes to solo performaces.  She did WDYHITS, a difficult song to do solo (She
always did it with her band during the EOTS Tour) and seemed to suffer through
most of it, even forgetting the lines halfway through.  Calling The Moon, a
song I have no particular fondness for or admiration of, was uninspired at
best.  February, done with Lucy and Richard's accompaniment, was, as usual,
chilling and captivating at the same time.  I still get chills from the
wonderful interplay of fingerpicking between Dar and Richard on that tune.  I
truly think Dar needs to get back to solo perfoming ASAP.  And not only for
selfish reasons as I stated previously.  The woman truly is rusty.  I have
every confidence that she will be back in top form in no time at all...all she
needs is the time to get back in solo shape.  But I think she needs to do
this.  Pronto.
  The rest of the CryCryCry show was great and we were treated to a newly
rehearsed song, Greener Pastures, by some bloke Dar announced as "Trad."  Such
a funny lady. And I think it worth noting that Dar was her usual hysterical
self, and in this respect has lost none of her timing or spontaneity.  Few
people ralize just how witty she actually is and could make a living as a
standup comic in my view.  Good to see Harvey, Sharon and RonG, Rick L and
someone named Michelle who confessed to being a Dar Lurker.
  Still have yet to hear Playing The Greed.  Disappointed Dar didn't do it
last nite.

	Just a quick note from your list guy. I am amazed at how quickly word and
interest in the Lucy list has spread. There were so many messages yesterday
I started thinking about switching to digest mode. And now that I mention
that. There were quite a few requests for that with the sudden surge in
traffic. While I know this is boring for all the old list hands here, I'll
go through it once for anyone new to mail lists. To change from bounce or
regular mode (where you get each individual message) to the digest, send one
message to majordomo@smoe.org with the following 2 lines in it:
	uns*bscribe lucy-list
	s*bscribe lucy-list-digest

	In each of those lines, replace the * with a  "u". That will get you one
message containing all the other messages. Digests will come out at least
once a day, more depending on traffic. There is more info on all of this in
the info file you received when you signed up. Or you can always email the

I just did this on the John Gorka list so I guess it's time to do it here
too.  I've been a fan of Lucy's since the early 1980's - I hung out at the
Speakeasy and Folk City and saw the Fast Folk crowd (including Lucy) early
on.  I have an LP and now CD of songs taken from the Corneila Street Cafe
with Lucy singing as Kaplanski &  Simon (Elliott I think - neither of their
first names is on the CD and the vinyl is packed away).  I was thrilled
when Lucy came back to music - I'd loved her voice and harmonies and was
always on the lookout for her own record.  She deserves all her success and
while it was delayed, it was inevitable.

Looking at this Songwriter's Exchange CD, I realize that this has Cliff
Eberhardt singing "Drive" which Lucy has been covering for the past year or
so in concert.  So she's known this song since 1980!.  Other folks on this
collection - Rod MacDonald, Cliff, David Massengill, Martha Hogan and
Michael Fracasso.  I've been wondering for years what happened to Martha
Hogan.  She's on a bunch of early Fast Folk albums and then disappeared.

Hey folks,
Sorry for the cross-posting (especially to those of you who are going to get
this 3 or 4 times!) - I just wanted to send out a quick reminder about the
Cry Cry Cry shows coming up this weekend.  As most of you know, the
Burlington show is already SOLD OUT, as is the early show at The Bottom Line
tonight (tickets still available for the late show, though), which is
*really* cool.  There are still tickets for all the other shows, though, and
we could really use a push on the Providence (c'mon you Bostonians, it's
only an hour away - I'm going!) and Hartford shows so tell your friends!
This tour is going to be winding down a bit over the next month (so that
each of the artists can do some solo stuff for a while) so you should check
'em out while you can!  James Keelaghan (author of my personal favourite C3
song - Cold Missouri Waters) will be opening the Providence, Burlington, and
Hartford shows and then Cliff Eberhardt will open the show in Peterborough.
Hope to see some familiar faces...

  That idea works for me! I need the caffeine for the usually long drive
home!
  I first heard Lucy at a house concert, having never heard of her, or
house concerts prior to that occasion. I was excited to be seeing a
friend of Shawn Colvin's sing, and was a fan that day, leaving with both
cd's. Ten Year Night is a terrific follow-up to them. Maybe Lucy will
have Shawn sing back-up on her next CD?

Hello everyone, 
This is especially for Tom, who asked for some Dar to listen to.  I'm a 
long time, die-hard Lucy and Shawn Colvin fan, and just discovered Dar.  
I really hate the "it's a generational thing" label.  Sure, I'm 18 years 
and can really relate to Dar's music, but I can also relate to Lucy and 
Shawn's music, and they're not from my generation.  Check out the End of 
the Summer, and the songs What Do You Hear In These Sounds? and Bought 
and Sold.  Dar's so good at writing highly expessive songs, and getting 
her ideas across.  I think Bought and Sold is one of the best 
expressions of the buying out of small town America that I've heard.  
And be sure to check out Better Things, with Lucy doing backup vocals.  
Ok, I know this is a lucy list so this will be my last off-topic post.  
Just hate to see people missing out on good music because they're 
drawing generational lines.

Well Ron, if we don't have a properly formed identity, or, even worse, if we
can't be psychologically coherent enough as a unit to come up with one, there
is a risk that Dr. Lucy hears of our plight, wants to ease the mental anguish
we are enduring and dips into her former life as a therapist.  She could
therefore become distracted from the music which actually eases more mental
burdens and creates more happiness than any therapist could ever dream of
salving or bringing.  How's that?

With that stupidity out of the way, I agree that "Hi Everyone" does it for
me....

However, for those who do insist on a name, I have to point out that no less
than the great Sir John of Gorka has pointed out that he is unable to think
when he hears Lucy sing. Knowing exactly what he means by that, I'm not sure
that any use of the word lucid connoting clarity, understanding or
intelligence captures the spirit.  Of course, there is the luminous aspect of
the word but, then again, no one gave John a vote anyway (unless of course
he's also joined the List)....

Sorry, I'm just a bit too happy this am after seeing Cry 3 last night at the
Bottom Line to get serious with work, and too busy with work to seriously post
about the show.  But I will post about it shortly....

doesn't look any older than that!!

trying to learn (not to mention I'm a lady, too).  I want to listen to more
of her songs & be more open-minded, especially since I've read all of the
positive posts about her!  I love her on the Cry3 CD & the only other Dar
CD I have is End of Summer.  So, if someone wouldn't mind pointing me in
the right direction, I'll try harder to love her like ya'll do!!

Subject: [lucy-list] Lucy's New CD--It is outstanding!

Well, it is nice that we mere mortals are finally getting our hands on Lucy's
new cd.  It is now for sale at her shows. This album is outstanding!  Lucy's
voice, the songs, the musicians, the backgrounds and harmonies (Richard
Shindell, John Gorka, Jennifer Kimball), and the production are all
unbelievable. RockinRonD was right--as great a song as Ten Year Night is--and
it is amazing--it may not be the best song on the album.  As a matter of fact,
after playing the record virtually nonstop for 24 hours, I still can't decide
which song is the best. I could go on (and on and on) but I'll stop.  I think
I've said it all.  One last point....this will be up at the top of everyone's
list for album of the year....now I'm done....

Hi,

I first heard Lucy singing harmony/backup on other people's albums.  One
morning, when I was half asleep, I heard a voice on the radio.  Sat up in
bed & turned the volume up.  I knew the voice but couldn't put a name to it
and it was driving me crazy.  When the DJ finally announced who it was I
was really excited to find out that Lucy had an album of her own out and I
immediately bought "The Tide".  I saw her live for the first time soon
after (opening for Townes Van Zandt at the Bottom Line) and since that time
I've seen her many, many more times.  This year already I've seen her twice
with Cry Cry Cry (Town Hall & last night at the Bottom Line) and once solo,
in the Bronx.  She's playing again at the Bottom Line next month with a
band so hopefully I'll be able to catch that show, too.  I really liked the
CCC shows because I also like Richard Shindell & Dar Williams.  Of the
three, I admit to liking Dar the least.  I have to be in the right mood to
listen to dar's albums, but I have always enjoyed her live shows and I have
seen her a bunch of times.  I've also seen just Lucy & Richard do a bunch
of shows together and those were *wonderful*.  

I picked up a copy of the new CD at the show last night and it hooked me
immediately.  I've heard do many of the songs live already over the last
year or two so the album already seemed like an old friend from the first
listen.  I also noticed that in the credits there were listings for the
lyrics & music.  I wondered how she & Rick Litvin worked out their
songwriting.  I guess now I know that they collaborate on lyrics but Lucy
comes up with the music on her own!

Speaking of HW... I was so surprised and pleased to see Grievous Angel
appear on Flesh and Bone.  One anomally, I couldn't find attribution to Gram
Parsons (or the other pretender that said HE wrote it) anywhere on the CD.
Having been a fan of Grams since before his death, and having found Lucy in
my 40's, I was tickled to see her mining what I think of as one of the
greatest singer/songwriters that ever lived.

By way of introduction, I'm Paul Tan based in Oxford, England, love =
acoustic music and like John Alvord came across Lucy through the Nanci =
Griffith connection....   I was mortified some years back when I =
discovered that Lucy had packed-in the music for a psychiatry career and =
was equally relieved when she returned....

Having seen Lucy a couple of times in concert in England I made the =
effort early last year to attend one of her gigs in MA and crossed the =
'pond' to that effect.  Had a great time. (Also saw Dar the following =
night....  what a trip!!!)   So it didn't take too much persuasion to =
repeat the exercise for the Cry3 concert in Charlotte, NC last month...  =
:-)   Besides, with Dar and Richard and Buddy Mondlock on the same bill, =
how could anyone lose???  (And it seems that a great many of you were =
there too!!  Awesome!)   and yes, that cameraman was just a little =
non-transparent.

My list of other favorite musicians is terribly long, so I'll avoid that =
litany for now...

Am presently patiently waiting for 'Ten Year Night'.

Has anyone on this list seen Lucy in those early days when Shawn Colvin =
and her were a duo ???

What an incredibly refreshing post, Susan.  As another one of the people who
"discovered" Lucy playing in Greenwich Village in the mid-80's, it's great to
know that there are other people out there who don't think that she just fell
off the Dar Williams turnip truck.  While I'm happy that Dar and C3 have
opened many eyes and ears to Lucy, she was doing this *long* before Dar.  I've
also got the Cornelia Street Cafe CD (recorded in 1980, when Dar was 13) -- as
well as all the Fast Folk LPs on which Lucy has peformed -- and it's great to
have been able to see her music career take shape.  I remember when she left
the business to become a psychologist, much to the chagrin of those who knew
her potential -- and I recall all the hoopla around folk circles when it
looked like she was going to come back.  There was much talk, if I recall
correctly, about Christine Lavin being eager to produce Lucy's debut CD, but
that never panned out.  Then came "The Tide" and the rest, as they say, is
history.

I recall being at the old Speakeasy in the Village in '85 or so, seeing Lucy
and Shawn together.  One night, they were playing a Robin Batteau song (either
"Guinevere" or "Eyes of My Beholder," I forget) and at one point during the
song, Robin himself stood up in the back of the room with his violin and
started playing along with them.  Talk about magic . . . whew.  There's also
some great stuff on those old Fast Folk albums, including a Lucy/Shawn duet of
a Judith Zweiman song called "Heart on Ice" that is the most incredible vocal
tour de force I've ever heard.

I'm a big Gram Parsons fan, too, and have been fortunate enough over the years
to have heard Lucy and Richard sing not only "Grievous Angel," but also "Love
Hurts," "Hickory Wind" and "Sin City."  Forget a sequel to Cry Cry Cry, how
about Richard and Lucy doing an entire CD of Gram Parsons covers?

Good call, Jennifer.  That's just standard list netiquette.  And I'd add one
more thing: while I'm all for the concept of "list as community," I've seen
too many lists where the subject matter becomes more about the list members
themselves than the actual subject of the list.  It would be nice to keep this
about Lucy and her music.  The basic rule should be: before you press the send
button, is what you've written actually something that YOU'D want to find in
your Emailbox?  Speaking just for myself, a post that just says "I agree" or
"Yes!!!!" is pretty useless.
