Hey, If Mr. Jones can become Mr. Nields, then Mr. Litvin could become Mr. K. (however, it might be a better idea to let him make the choice himself ;-) Besides, wouldn't Mr. Kaplansky be Irving as in "mathematician extraordinaire." BTW when I saw Lucy in Littleton, MA last month there were some older folks (along the lines of Lucy's parent's age) who were math teachers and knew of her father Irving Kaplansky. She was very surprised and pleased and gave them his e-mail address so they could write to him and request the words to the hilarious math song he wrote (which she sang at the gig). Just to add my .02 intro I saw Lucy for the 1st time in '95 as an opener for Greg Brown at the Somerville (MA) theatre. I had never heard of her (missed her on her first career), but really enjoyed her set. At that time she had just put out "The Tide" (I believe) and Greg was promoting "The Poet Game" Since I wasn't prepared to buy 2 CDs and I liked both I settled for a compilation CD (I think it was put out by Red House) with one song from each of them, plus many more. It was a great way to get exposed to many more artists that I probably wouldn't have heard otherwise. Since then I've picked up F&B (oh, I did get that hidden track to play - thanks all!) and will definitely get 10-Yr Night. Anyway, I didn't see her again until C^3 came to Cambridge, but can't see enough of her now. Same goes for both Dar & Richard. Luckily the Boston area is pretty rich with these guys (and many others - not to rub it in, but...) And I was going to reply to Sheila about how Dar is anything but shallow, but I think Howie and Jen have expressed it pretty well. Maybe it would help if she realized Dar's "blond thing" is a more recent gradual occurrence. ;-) Looking forward to hearing from you all. My local radio station introduced me to Lucy and Dar and Richard individually (blindly) all about the same time by playing fantastic cuts. I purchased "Mortal City" and found it tremendously appealing, as I did the other one with "Guinevere" and the one that makes me weepy "When I was a Boy". I like her voice, her songs, her style. I also found "The Tide" that way which led me to a wonderful lucy show here in SLC. She was great. I bought a second copy of "Flesh and Bone" for the excuse to tell her how great the show was. I discovered Lucy just over a year ago at a great show - it was Lucy and Richard on New Year's Eve in Oakland, NJ. I went back this past New Year's Eve to see Cry, Cry, Cry in the same town. (They definitely pick some good acts for their New Year's Eve celebration!) I live just north of New York city, so I have managed to catch several small "local" shows by Lucy over the past year - it has been a lot of fun introducing friends to her work, and the small venues are great! (There is some very good interaction with the audience.) If you are at a show, and she hasn't sung "Drive" (written by Cliff Eberhardt, I believe) then you should put in a request for it. (Cliff is reportedly somewhat upset that Lucy gets a better response to it than he does.) I also really enjoy it when she does her father's songs. She did the complete version of "That's Mathematics" at the last show I attended. The other one that I really like is "A Song About Pi". Thanks very much for starting up this list! On the name front, I had always imagined the name of Lucy's list being something like "scorpion list" (from "Flesh and Bone"; I love this song), but agree that "lucy-list" is much less obscure. As far as a name for list members goes, "lucites" has some good potential, as does "lucencies" and "lucidities". Of course, we could just go with the obvious "lucy-listers" with perhaps "lucy-lurkers" for those who choose not to post... Anyone have any info on a possible CD release party for "Ten Year Night"??? I don't see anything specific at http://www.musi-cal.com/search?performers=kaplansky, but I do see that she is going to be very busy touring over the next couple of months! (Even one night in Alaska!) Looks like lots of us will have a chance to see her in person. Just wanted to send a quick "get to know me" note. I first heard of Lucy (like John Alvord) through Nanci Griffith. Then, on the NanciNet list, Lucy's name kept popping up when "The Tide" was released, largely in the context of "If you like Nanci, then you will like this..." So I bought "The Tide" and was completely blown out of the water by her guitar work, and her voice. It couldn't have been but a few weeks, and she turned up in a performance in the fall of 1995 here in Chicago at the Old Town School of Folk Music's "Sunday Showcase" series (new artists are featured, etc.). And since Lucy is from here originally, it was like old home week. She was so gracious and sincere, and still seemed like she herself couldn't believe 250 people would show up to hear her sing and play. Fast forward to fall of 1998 and I caught a show of hers at FitzGerald's in one of the nearby western suburbs. The crowd was much sparser (ca. 75), but the performance was scintillating. I brought a group of about 8 folks with me and told them to just "trust me on this one." Those 8 and then some were present for the Cryx3 show (two of them, both sold out) at Old Town School in January. She's due back in town a week from Sunday at Schubas (which holds about 150 folks), and I cannot wait. Now, about Dar. It's hardly fair to compare two different artists head-to-head (or voice-to-voice), especially in the case where these two women are great friends. Suffice to say that when I first heard "The Honesty Room," (and specifically "When I Was a Boy"), it changed my life. Her lovely encapsulation about young people trying to find their way in the world, and defying our society's stringent gender role norms, I thought wow -- this person has been paying attention and keeping notes. Perhaps it's just the social scientist in me. But I would definitely give Dar a fair try. Oh, and by the way, as for demographics, I am male, 40, gay, etc., so I don't think it's an age or gender thing in terms of "getting Dar." No matter... there's room for all opinions... She can almost get here, because she makes it regularly to Santa Barbara, but can hardly ever seem to get closer. Grumble. I hear she's coming to Pasadena in May.). Anyway, I've tried to listen to Dar's stuff on a number of occasions since The Honesty Room came out, and her music's never clicked for me. I find her lyrics to fall into the "I'm trying too hard to be meaningful and deep" category, and the rest of the musical package isn't very interesting. Perhaps it's because I'm not a hard-core folk fan; I tend to like the more-accessible folk artists like Lucy and Shawn Colvin, and I love Mary-Chapin Carpernter's stuff. Even just the guitar intro to the song -- it gets right into ya! I love it. I love listening to it, and I love playing it on the guitar. Also, "edges" another great one. I believe I saw Lucy do this song last year, and just the personality that comes out in it... the attitude... it's so great to see live, but even on the CD you get a sense of that. My favorite songs on Lucy's first two CD's are: Scorpion This is Mine If you could see Edges My name Joe I also saw David Massengill a while back, and it's nice to hear him sing "my name joe" too...
