The first non-Nanci recording I heard was on a Fast Folk CD, doing Ballad of Mary Magadelene with Richard Shindell harmonizing. I was amazed to hear her voice, amazed that she sounded so much like Nanci Griffith that I loved. (not really true, but the echoes are there). Later on I tracked down her first two records and just got Ten Year Night from Red House by mail. I have seen her twice in a house concert (Blixt in NJ), once at Emelin Theater in Mamaroneck NY, and once with CryCryCry at Emelin Theater. I like her writing and hope we can discuss lyrics at some point. Thats all for now... I am rather busy preparing for a move on March 29. I saw Cry Cry Cry in Charlotte, NC a few weeks ago because I love Lucy Kaplansky's music and lyrics and of course her great hair. I had sort of heard of Dar Williams and could tell from the cry cry cry cd liner notes that she was the sort of the more known name, but that's typical of me to prefer the lesser known person. Richard has a wonderful voice and is a great musician and Lucy's voice is incredible, but can someone please explain the appeal of Dar? I'm sure she's a nice enough person, but she strikes me as one of those nice shallow type girls that were on your dorm hall that you smiled at, but never got into a real conversation. I have really worked on this - - maybe it is the blonde thing (I'm a red head). I hope not, but frankly, she giggled through the entire concert and dominated it with her talking. There were three adorable high school students in front of me at the concert and when Dar sang a solo (The Pagans and the Christians - again, that song just makes me want to prescribe an anti-anxiety medication for Dar) those three girls went nuts - so I figure maybe it is an age thing. At 34, I'm too old for Dar?? Anyway, I look forward to a Lucy and Richard concert sometime. Sheila B. On Wed, 03 Mar 1999 13:46:39 GMT jalvo@cloud9.net (John Alvord) writes: >Hi - I am John Alvord. Since that time, I've seen her perform at least eight other times. She's truly an amazing talent and I feel very fortunate to have seen her that many times. Recently, I saw her perform with Cry3 in Minneapolis and Madison, WI. Those were two of the finest concerts I've seen in a long time. Buddy and Julie Miller were the front act and they were awesome in their own right. During the Minneapolis show, John Gorka made a guest appearance, singing two songs with Lucy at his side. Their voices always sound great together. I've yet to order a copy of "Ten Year Night", but at a Susan Werner performance at the Cedar Cultural Centre in Minneapolis, they played a promo version that was excellent. It's probably time for an advanced order myself. Last, but not least, check out the photos I took at the Rocky Mountain Folks Fest in Lyons, CO. You'll find them on pages 2 and 3 of Lucy's photo pages at her web site. I gave these photos to Lucy at a show here in Eau Claire, WI. It was an honor to have them published. At 34, I'm too old for Dar?? Anyway, I look forward to a > Lucy and Richard concert sometime. Hmmm. I'm a huge Dar Williams fan. I got The Honesty Room shortly after it was released. I listened to it a couple of times and thought, "ho-hum". Then I listened to it again and for the first time I HEARD it. Her lyrics are deceptively simple, and amazingly poetic. She has a great 3-octave voice and knows her way around a guitar. An age thing? For what it's worth, I'm about a decade older than you and am far from being the oldest on the dar-list. I suggest you try again, this time with the acoustic The Honesty Room. You may not like it, but you won't be able to refer to her as shallow again! BTW, I did see Lucy and Richard play together last year, in New Bedford, MA. It was her anniversary that day (with "Mr. K." in the audience) and her rendition of Ten Year Night was awesome. - -- Howie Lyhte howie@lucent.com ________________________________________________________________________ \|/ ____ \|/ ~@-/ oO \-@~ /_( \__/ )_\ Don't panic! \__U_/ ************************************************************************* To unsubscribe from the Lucy Kaplansky mailing list, send a a message to majordomo@smoe.org with the text "unsubscribe lucy-list" in the body of the message. ************************************************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 03 Mar 1999 12:54:38 -0500 From: Howie Lyhte Subject: [lucy-list] Re: lucy-land Jack Renaud wrote: > also...i need to know how to send a private e-mail to the > list manager, if such a human exists....anyone provide guidance on how > to do so? Shanley" Subject: [lucy-list] the appeal of Dar... >>could someone please explain the appeal of Dar?>> Well... Come on Dar fans, help me out here... I would have to say that Dar just has a way of poetically expressing some of the truest elements of life (sorry if "truest" isn't a word. hehehe). Some of her songs speak to a younger generation and others speak to her own generation... or maybe even older generations... but I think a majority of her work speaks to us all, and that is part of the genius of Dar. Her songwriting is defitely unique.... sometimes it's just amazing to think that she could fit *so many words* into a song and still have it make sense without it seeming that she's saying too much. (not to mention how she makes all those words work so well with her guitar playing). I, personally, really like her voice, but I don't think you get the full effect of Dar's voice unless she's singing her own stuff... February... Iowa... Family... I love, I love... etc... that is Dar's voice! I suppose it's not for everyone, or maybe you just have to get used to it. BUT when she sings harmony with Lucy and Richard, it's just *incredible*!!! Lucy's voice, of course, is amazing, and perhaps more powerful than Dar's. when you combine them... wow! They have *very* *very* different voices. But isn't "I know what kind of love this is" GREAT with the two of them harmonizing?! well, that's what I think anyway. ~jen~ :-) NP: Scott Sylvester "Sign On" (Scott opened for Lucy at a show last year! And there was much laughter all around. ************************************************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Mar 1999 14:53:48 -0500 (EST) From: Hannah Louise Tracy Subject: Re: [lucy-list] listers! hey there, everyone! my name is Hannah and am a sophomore at Bowling Green State University, in Bowling Green, Ohio.
