The questions were pretty dopey-- no great surprise there, I guess, but everyone answered in good humor. If you haven't managed to hear them perform live, do your best to get there. As of this moment, at least, there are no plans for any future albums together, so this could just be a one time deal. We are nearing that time with Lucy when her popularity begins to be a minor detriment to those of us who have known her a long time. The great paradox with folk performers is that we all want our favorites to be successful, but as they become more successful, it becomes harder and harder to relate to them on a personal level. No fault of the performers, I hasten to add, just that venues become larger and crowds more vast, logic dictates that the distance between performer and audience member grows. As a few of us long time fans have joked with Lucy, in a few years, we may have to go through "her people" before we can talk to her. Still, it's nice to have success come to someone truly talented AND personable like Lucy. Seems to me that Lucy's about as humble and grounded a performer as I can imagine, as opposed to Richard, who, while I think he's incredibly talented, can be a little aloof and caustic at times. And as far as larger venues and vaster crowds, I've repeated this litany before, but this IS folk music we're talking about. The biggest venue Lucy is likely to perform is a folk festival; it's not like she'll be selling out stadium shows, 20,000 seat arenas or even 5,000 seat theaters, not as a solo act. I saw her at SUNY on Long Island a few months ago, and there were all of 35 people there. She's not likely to ever get the type of national exposure and notoriety that will result in the type of distance between her and her fans that you seem to be concerned about. Even Dar, for all the hoopla surrounding her, continues to do "meet and greets," knows many of her fans by name, and is a sweet, grounded lady. I can't imagine success spoiling Lucy. Lucy is one of the most approachable artists i know and she has a great appreciation for her fans. Just try to keep her away from a meet and greet :) Just one persons opinion Jodi ************************************************************************* To unsubscribe from the Lucy Kaplansky mailing list, send a a message to majordomo@smoe.org with the text "unsubscribe lucy-list" in the body of the message. ************************************************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Feb 1999 16:56:43 EST From: RockinRonD@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] People Who Need People In a message dated 99-02-27 15:46:42 EST, someone wrote: << No doubt Lucy will make it, but i don't think that we will have to worry about "having to go through her people" for a while yet. >> I don't want to burst anyone's bubble here, but the truth is we ALREADY have to go through Lucy's "people" in order to talk to her. That people is Emily Liepa, from Red House Records and Lucy does not give interviews unless they're scheduled through her. However, this does not reflect an unfriendliness or snootiness on Lucy's part. But given her schedule, she absolutely MUST have somone schedule the many requests she now gets for interviews. I've known Lucy for a couple of years now, and Dar even longer, and I still have to arrange an interview with either through their PR people. And I can call Lucy at her New York apartment if I wanted to. But out of respect, I go through Liepa like everyone else (Ditto for Dar in Northampton). Thought Lucy looked good on CBS this morning, but a little freshening up on the lipstick would have been well-advised I think. Still, it was great seeing all three on network TV. That should help record sales a tad. It is also great that Jodi is posting which means she is back and (hopefully) feeling terrific. For my two cents (which if given the opportunity I will easily turn into an hour and a half diatribe), I don't think that anyone who is a fan of Lucy's should be overly concerned about what kind of distance will develop between her and her fans as her success grows. Sure, it is really great to see her after a show and stand there and talk to her and Rick--nah, I admit it, it is really way better than that, but if I had to choose between seeing my favorite chanteuse for a quick moment of chat after a show, or her being so successful that it becomes impractical for her to do so--to paraphrase the great line from Casablanca--"we'll always have Paris." I think all of us would love to maintain a personal relationship with Lucy--she is just that kind of a special person. The intimacy of her music makes it almost a natural thing. However, Lucy has worked hard at her craft and she deserves to have the kind of success that would draw in audiences of thousands at a time and make it harder to say hello to everyone at the show. I don't think that Lucy will be needing to buy larger hats. She and Rick are two of the most wonderful and talented people I have ever met. Does success change people? Of course it does. Does success ruin everyone? Of course not. A number of friends of mine who are quite friendly with a large number of other artists have always put Lucy in a special class. I would be willing to bet a fair amount that she stays in just such a category. I hope that the people on this list remember that this was the first real thread we started discussing....Lucy's success, a very cool place to start.... Harvey NP--Ten Year Night--it is a masterpiece! ************************************************************************* To unsubscribe from the Lucy Kaplansky mailing list, send a a message to majordomo@smoe.org with the text "unsubscribe lucy-list" in the body of the message. ************************************************************************* ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V1 #4 ***************************** This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
