If somebody started that, they'd be making an invaluable contribution. It's welcome on Dar-list up to a point, but I don't want to start losing members from high volume. << You *can*t be serious. What "excellent contemporary folk artists" would you recommend we relegate to this general list? That's like saying "OK, we've decided that there are too many folk concerts out there. From now on, only *some* of you get to perform solo gigs to your own audience. The rest of you, you can only perform in festivals with other artists who your fans may or may not like." Please, there's not a single reason in the *world* not to have a Lucy list. I mean, where else should her fans go to hold in-depth conversations about her music? Here? Heck, the only reason Lucy's even mentioned here at *all* is the C3 project. Once that's over, where to go? The folk_music list? Nope, since an extended Lucy thread would get squashed faster than you can say "Alan sez." And for anyone who says "God, I can't deal with another list," the answer is simple: Don't s*bscribe to it. No one's holding a gun to your head. I think any artist with a dedicated fan base should have a place for the fans to discuss his or her music, concerts, resemblances to TV characters . . . Personally, I will probably join, but I can't say now whether or not I would stay. I've joined a bunch of lists in the past 2 years, and the Dar-list is the only one I've stayed on. I'm sure a Lucy list would grow into a similar community, though, so it should be interesting to see. In a message dated 2/25/99 1:20:19 AM Eastern Standard Time, maura@everywareinc.com writes: << Just wanted to express my appreciation for tonight's Grammy show. I thought it was one (if not the) best award show I've ever watched. The show's producers really made it more about the music and less about the winning. <>Who knows, maybe next year Dar will be nominated...>> With all due respect to Maura's opinion, and to those who also enjoyed the show, I can no longer force myself to watch a music 'awards' show which doesn't come remotely close to sufficiently recognizing or rewarding those artists who engage in the writing, performing, and producing of what many on this list would generally consider to be good music. Yes, I do realize that Lucinda did win for her 'folk' album Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, but I am still mystified how anyone can call that a 'folk' album. It should have been nominated, and probably should have won, album of the year. Greg Brown was nominated--but for 'classic' folk?--what is that? I am hopelessly confused by the Grammy labels. Where were the nominations for most of the artists who are talked about on this list? Did I miss Lori McKenna's nomination for best new artist? What are the chances that artists whose names have appeared on this list might actually be nominated? Unfortunately, they are not very great under the current Grammy system. Jeff Thomas is totally correct when he says that we all know that the Grammy's recognize commercial success and 'veteran' artists rather than artistic accomplishments. So, obviously, what therefore follows is that as great as an album by an 'independent' may be, the best chances that she/he has to be nominated next year are that either lightning strikes and/or some 'major' label steps in and throws huge sums of money into publicity and distribution? No, I'm not so simple and naive that I don't understand the process--I just hate it. Yes, I am aware of some of the artists who have won in the past, but I am acutely (and somewhat painfully) aware of those that are being nominated and winning the major awards in the present. The show last night may well have been 'about the music' and therefore a good show when compared to other so called 'award' shows, but it still seems to me that it was a party I am very happy that I did not need to attend. I do realize the somewhat provincial tone of this rant, and Maura I do apologize for taking a swing at your well intentioned post (this is obviously not directed at you at all), but that show, despite the fact that it probably does represent the state of music today a lot more than my opinion, is impossible for me to watch. I guess I should be grateful that Michael Bolton wasn't the big winner -- again. Sorry for the tirade, Harvey NP(Not Playing)-Lauryn Hill, Celine Dion, etc. np(now playing)-Ten Year Night, Cry3, Mortal City, Reunion Hill, Slant 6 Mind, etc. , etc., etc. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Feb 1999 20:27:23 -0500 From: "Bill McDonough" Subject: [lucy-list] Traffic Not much traffic yet, but there are only a handful of people on the list.
