Of the things that are from 2013, I really like all the new stuff I've heard. Fade - Yo La Tengo (I'm still not a big fan of Ohm, but the rest of the album has some nice stuff) The Next Day - David Bowie (the most excited I've got over a new Bowie album in years!) Push the Sky Away - Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds (rather more minimal in palette than other Bad Seeds albums, but still has a number of real gems) The Idyllist - Steve Kilbey (a big step back up from last year's Garage Sutra, to my mind, with some interesting pushing of the style envelope). I was already into REM, Let's Active and the Three O'Clock, and this clearly fit that mold. The drums have a great headlong urgency, and the combination of twinkly keyboard figures, charging guitar and Scott going for the vocal kill were instantly memorable. That said, GT kind of lurked down in the middle of the pack of bands I followed for a while, and I wasn't actually that crazy about *Big Shot Chronicles* when it came out. But *Lolita Nation* changed that. It's still my favorite Scott album, and one of my favorite albums, period. I'd heard the name Game Theory, which I thought was a cool name for a band, had heard that they'd become The Loud Family and were working at a place my friend worked. He said he was sure I'd like them. I did nothing. Saw a note about "The Tape of Only Linda" in a year-end Rolling Stone and thought that was a cool name for an album. But the crucial chain of events began when my brother-in-law came up from Los Angeles, gave me a mix tape, and insisted I play the Loud Family songs at the start of it right away, sure that I'd like them. Since I'd just read about them in Rolling Stone, I was certainly primed, and when the first song started playing, it was just one of those moments that I knew I was hooked forever. My brother-in-law's way of annotating mix tapes wasn't terribly helpful. It began with just "Loud Family 3x," meaning three songs. So I later walked over to Barnes & Noble, figuring I'd probably try to find "The Tape of Only Linda." They didn't have it, but they had one called "Plants and Birds and Rocks and Things" with a cool cover. I turned it over, and the first song was called "He Do the Police in Different Voices," and I had a shock of recognition: I didn't know exactly what it was from, but I knew it was somewhere in T.S. Eliot, one of my minor obsessions. It seemed another good omen, so I bought it. As soon as I put it on at home, I realized "He Do the Police" was the first song from the mix tape. I think Scott remains the only person I've ever written an unabashed fan letter to, and thus I'm batting 1.000, given that he hand-wrote a very nice, lengthy reply. PBRT is still my favorite album, followed by Interbabe Concern (and of course I had the pleasure of learning all about Game Theory via this list and Sue's great website). Under-appreciated songs: "Not Because You Can," with a tip of the hat to Gil Ray, "Slit My Wrists," and "The Second Grade Applauds," with a tip of the hat to Joe Becker, especially the fabulous fifteen-second rock-out at the very end there. So I hope maybe plants and birds and rocks and things can justify this post on the man's birthday. Best, Bob On 4/4/13 1:47 PM, "treesprite@earthlink.net" wrote: >It's Scott's birthday. I believe "The Young Drug" might have been the first one I heard and that I didn't know who or what it was at the time. The first one I really, clearly remember hearing for the first time was "Curse of the Frontier Land" and I had to get out and get it as soon as I could. There was one copy (vinyl, of course) of "Real Nighttime" at the Princeton Record Exchange, and I snapped it up. Although it was new and sealed, when I played it, it turned out to have a flaw in the pressing that sounded like a scuff, but I refused to return the album because I was afraid they wouldn't be able to get me another one, or that it would take a long time to come in, and I was not going to give it up for a moment. I still have that copy! I think Two Steps on cassette was the first GT album for me. My favorite albums are Real Nightime and Interbabe Concern. My favorite under-the-radar song is probably "She'll Be A Verb". I once got drunk enough to try and play it in front of Scott -- I don't really remember how that panned out. xo B - -----Original Message----- >From: Matthew Weber >Sent: Apr 4, 2013 9:10 PM >To: loud-fans@smoe.org >Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Birthday > >I bought a copy of the Enigma Variations years and years ago, and "24" and >"Shark Pretty" were both on it.
