For one... nice to see some activity on the list... especially since my last post (the Kickstarter link) was more or less DOA. (He's reached the goal... and just surpassed the $13K mark....with 42 days left to go) R.E.M./Smiths/Duran Duran: I never even thought that one couldn't be a fan of both Smiths and R.E.M...I always thought they were so different. Now I admit, I only know The Smiths through the singles, and the only track I liked was "How Soon Is Now?". I always found Morrissey's image/voice to be quite cloying....a sentiment I have to this day. On the other hand.... I only became a fan of R.E.M. around the Green album, so I missed the whole comparison thing while both were active at the same time. After writing all that, I realize that I don't have much to contribute to this discussion. I'm intrigued by the new Duran Duran album... I haven't done more than cursory listening to that one... but I am liking the very classic Duran sound on the whole thing. Them denouncing their last record was probably a good thing, considering it was their most obvious bid for radio success and everyone saw through it. Quarter horn: I'm with Miles.... I'm REALLY liking the Joy Formidable album. It's the first shoe-gazy album I've liked in a really long time. Another one I've been digging a bit is The Naked And Famous PASSIVE ME AGGRESSIVE YOU. Another one of those Neo-New Wave bands... I'm digging it quite a bit. If you got into Passion Pit or MGMT's first record, you'll like this one. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Apr 2011 10:25:13 -0700 (GMT-07:00) From: treesprite@earthlink.net Subject: Re: [loud-fans] The Smiths & REM & Duran Duran >I will add myself to the LOUDER THAN BOMBS chorus. But I also have great affection for >STRANGEWAYS, HERE WE COME, even though, as some have noted, it sounds more >like a Morrissey solo album. Of the four studio records, STRANGEWAYS is the one I like best, too -- it's an interesting taste of where they might've gone and it's got a greater variety of production and arrangements ideas (I love starting the album off with a song in which Marr doesn't play any guitar!) Morrissey really was in full command of all his powers by then, too -- lyrically and vocally. For those of us who have stayed on the Morrissey bandwagon through the solo years, which are the favorites? I gotta admit there are only two albums I think are less than great, so I'm clearly a bit nuts for the catalog. And talk about a wealth of high quality non-album singles and b-sides! There are many ways in which the man has emulated the record buying experiences of his youth with his own catalog, and the use of the single format is maybe the most obvious. Not many contemporary artists have taken that route -- maybe Belle & Sebastian, but then that's likely due to The Smiths' influence! xo, B ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Apr 2011 11:20:00 -0700 (PDT) From: robert toren Subject: Subject: Re: [loud-fans] The Smiths & REM & Duran Duran > But Bradley and I can definitely agree on LOUDER THAN > BOMBS! When Miles and I agree on something, it is a momentous occasion that requires action -- you must now purchase Louder Than Bombs!! Consider LTB bought - can't wait! All these insights and suggestions are much appreciated. R ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Apr 2011 08:42:54 -1000 From: "R. Man, I have been tracking Belle & Sebastian's influences, which inevitably forces one to confront Felt's catalog. Somehow, I managed to miss Felt in toto during the 1980's, so I started with their "Absolute Classic Masterpieces" compilation, only to be baffled about how this band could possibly have anything to do with the development of Belle & Sebastian. If you've not heard their 1979-85 work before, its dominated by Maurice Deebank's guitar playing and really is worth a listen. I'm assuming I'm late to the party and everyone else on the the list is a Felt-o-phile, but if you're not, there's some great stuff in that portion of their catalog. A writer at a blog commented that Felt was a project during the Deebank period, but only became a band during the period that focused on the keyboard work of future Primal Scream member Martin Duffy. In my ignorance, I hadn't bothered to discovered that "Absolute Classic Masterpieces" didn't cover Felt's entire career, so when I downloaded their 1986 "Forever Breathes the Lonely Word" album, I immediately said "Oh, that's where Stuart Murdoch is coming from." It, and the remaining albums Felt released before dissolving in 1989, are all worth a few minutes of your time. Felt certainly has some things in common with the early Cure and Echo and The Bunnymen on their pre-1985 albums (and some obvious connections to the Cocteau Twins on their seminal "Ignite The Seven Cannons" album), but the later albums are a kind of "Lloyd Cole meets somebody who thinks even deeper thoughts" sort of affair. Frontman Lawrence (who is a fascinating and strange character) was really taking the band into some fascinating territory when he broke them up. Anyhow, late to the Felt party, but glad I finally made it. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Apr 2011 15:29:09 -0400 From: Dave Walker Subject: [loud-fans] As long as we're talking jangly bands from the 80s... I downloaded the McCarthy singles comp from Emusic ("That's All Very Well But...") a few months ago and I've had it in very heavy rotation. Very catchy songs, with Tim Gane (later of Stereolab) playing delicious 12-string. Does anyone have a preference among their studio albums? I haven't picked any of those up yet. -d.w. we are all bourgeois now ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Apr 2011 10:06:55 -1000 From: "R. Thank you for mentioning them! Just listened to "Keep Your Mind Open Or Else" (Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XHC3dGkewcg) and wish I'd known about them when I was doing the college DJ thing because they would have definitely gotten a ton of airplay on my show. I've missed so much great music - sometimes it makes me a little ill.
