(Elsewhere on the page is a very favorable review of a Steve Wynn album as well.) Second on EDD's Riot Now. A pleasantly raucous surprise. So I've added Eleventh Dream Day to my Rhapsody.com streaming playlist. Thanks, Andy! Meanwhile, as usual, I'm not really focused on the new year's music yet, but so far I have quasi-informed opinions on five 2011 albums: Charlotte Martin's DANCING ON NEEDLES is excellent, though if you're new to her, I'd recommend her STROMATA (from 2006) first. STROMATA suggested an alternate-world Tori Amos who had all the real Ms. Amos's arrangement skills, adventurousness, and variety -- even including a couple fascinating impulses Tori hadn't gotten to yet -- but a conventionally strong and pretty singing voice and solidly competent not-at-all-weird lyrics. DANCING ON NEEDLES is more normal, sticking pretty close to LITTLE EARTHQUAKES's stylistic terrain, which makes it more obvious that she doesn't have anything nearly as interesting to say. It's very pretty, though. Those Dancing Days's DAYDREAMS AND NIGHTMARES is a kinetic album of glossy clubworthy pop songs -- maybe Lights, if Ms. Poxleitner had more money to spend and a hint of soul/blues in her voice, or Girls Aloud without the cheerleader-chant boisterousness -- with top-notch punk-rock drumming. A couple of fast songs sound like Paramore produced to Robyn's specifications. Solefald's NORRON LIVSKUNST is a metal album with more gargled screams (i.e., any) than I really like, but has majesty, erratic tunefulness, shifting rhythms, and moments of beauty on its side. Shugo Tokumaru's PORT ENTROPY is eclectic bedroom pop songs in Japanese. I don't like it, unfortunately. Radiohead's KING OF LIMBS seemed like a disappointment to me when I saw the tracklisting and assumed it had only eight songs. It turns out I was wrong, and over-estimated the number of songs by eight. *** On one listen, Stricken City's LOSING COLOUR reminds me of Arcade Fire if they borrowed some programmed textural depth from Doves, a hint of playfulness and flirtation from Architecture in Helsinki, and some guitar heroism from Mary Timony. I suspect I will like it a lot. On one listen, I have a hunch that Mountain Goats' ALL ETERNALS DECK will turn out to be (for me) one of their career highlights. It is *way* too early to know this, but I hope I'm right. On three not-very-attentive listens, R.E.M.'s COLLAPSE INTO NOW strikes me as a redundant sequel to ACCELERATE. I might change my mind.

I'm really loving Destroyer, The Unthanks, John Vanderslice, Deerhoof, PJ Harvey, Lifeguards, Wanda Jackson, Tennis and a gorgeous E.P. called Leaves Ellipse by a band called Grand Lake: http://grandlake.bandcamp.com/album/leaves-ellipse I'm also really digging the Nobunny record which maybe I should be ashamed to admit. But it's really damn good. Just stumbled across a new band called The Wrong Words who do a Shoes/Scruffs/Stiff Records power pop thing that's pretty satisfying -- clearly a part of the cool garage rock renaissance going on, but with some songwriting chops beyond your average record recyclists: http://www.troubleinmindrecs.com/bands/wrongwords.html Supremely disappointed in the REM and Joy Formidable records. On the fence about the Teddy Thompson. Really looking forward to Cass McCombs, Low, Marry Waterson & Oliver Knight (Lal Waterson's kids) and Title Tracks (there's a free song from the Title Tracks record here: http://rcrdlbl.com/artists/title_tracks/track/turn_your_face -- it's in mono!) BTW, for the sake of list relevance: It was a blast to see Scott join The Orange Peels the other night. He read his entry on The OP's "2020" and then played it with them.
