While we'll have to dodge the cartoon steam coming out of Mark's head when he reads the top pick, here's "Rolling Stone" on the "The Best Record Stores In The USA": http://www.rollingstone.com/music/photos/28431/201795/0 Glad to see my hometown represented thrice (then again, guess where reporter Michelangelo Matos lives...) Ballard, the Brooklyn of Seattle? (The Oslo, maybe), Andy This list is pretty good but WHY does Detroit ALWAYS get overlooked!!? They left out some of the best places in the world to shop for records. Namely "Melodies and Memories", "Peoples Records", "Car City Records"....all great places to find new, used, rare vinyl. Detroit never gets the respect it deserves. - --from "crj411" regarding the above link, at http://www.rollingstone.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Sep 2010 10:31:08 -0700 (PDT) From: Gil Ray Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Earshot Music, sadly, does not make the cut... Of course Stacey and I are thrilled with the results! Now...go shop people! Thanks for sharing this Andy. The slide show brought on a big dose of nostalgia mixed with commercial realisation. The former because one of the things I almost never get a chance to do these days is while away a few hours in a record shop, as I did in my teens and twenties especially. This is for a couple of reasons - being in Germany the few places that have a decent stock charge double what I can import things from the UK or even US for; and even when I go back to Britain for breaks just about every single quality independent store I've used has closed (there are a couple left in Leeds, I think, but I never get shopping time that far north!). The latter is the sense of size I get from many of the RS photos. Some are small neighbourhood shops, but loads look like huge city stores. When that size is matched by dynamism you have a chance to compete with your rivals. Many independents in the UK went under when supermarkets started selling chart stuff, while online retailers carved up the genre markets, taking away business from both ends of the spectrum.I think I'll now have to spend part of tomorrow checking to see if my favourite local 2nd hand place has survived the refurbishment of its building!! Thanks,Richard - --- On Fri, 24/9/10, Andrew Hamlin wrote: From: Andrew Hamlin Subject: [loud-fans] Earshot Music, sadly, does not make the cut...
