Tris McCall is now (and has been for a few months) the staff rock critic and pop music writer at the Star-Ledger, which is New Jersey's largest daily paper. That'll make it hard to dismiss all rock critics at the dailies for a while. You can find his work online, of course. Probably all of us know that McCall is also a fine songwriter whose debut solo album was produced by Scott Miller--and his other great albums continue a debt to the guy. On the slightly less Scott Miller-oriented peripheral, Tommy Keene's upcoming two-disc comp looks set to be a perfect collection of vital tracks from his entire career. You can also check out Keene's production work on the upcoming (officially July 17, but look around) MISGUIDED PROMISE: CARNIVAL SEASON COMPLETE (1984-89). Keene produced the sole album from Carnival Season, that being a stellar Birmingham, AL act whose pop-oriented garage rock has aged far better than the rock criticism written about them at the time. Looks like there'll be a Primitons career comp from the same label, too. ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V9 #107 *******************************
