I tried to play some stuff that was hard to find/not on CD--I also played "Copy" from The Plastics' debut (and I think only) lp, as well as "Dream in Gray" by The Swimming Pool Q's. - --Mark, who can't get the opening track, "The High Road," on the Broken Bells album out of his head--its melodies have haunted me for two days ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 2010 16:11:37 EDT From: TruePantone293@aol.com Subject: [loud-fans] Cold Souls Has anyone seen this film, COLD SOULS? Admittedly, Paul Giamatti is quite possibly my favorite actor (tied with Philip Seymour Hoffman and John Malkovich), so my objectivity is probably lacking, but I thought this was a superb film. My only complaint is that it is being marketed as a laugh-a-minute comedy, and only laughed a little bit--once. I found it intense and disturbing, so I'm not understanding why the critics think it's in the same ball park as SLEEPER or other vintage Woody Allen. I took the plunge as it was on sale (I'm forever a disc buyer, I guess), and I'd just heard songs live on World Cafe earlier that evening, and I think it is the best Ted Leo since THE TYRANNY OF DISTANCE. Great drumming--like Gil Ray on diet pills playing "The Waist and the Knees." Great > drumming--like Gil Ray on diet pills playing "The Waist and the Knees." I've always thought that "The Ballad of the Sin Eater" has its "The Waist and the Knees"-like qualities. Mr. Leo is a big Game Theory fan, so for once we're hearing actual influence instead of coincidence. Rog and I have different opinions of the Leo catalog. I thought SHAKE THE SHEETS, while very good, was becoming a little formulaic, and it's still the only Leo album where I have difficulty recalling the tunes if I'm reading through the titles. On the other hand, LIVING WITH THE LIVING injected some much-needed variety into the mix, and was a big winner with me. I'd still pick HEARTS OF OAK first, but LIVING would be second. But I can agree that the new one - which needs a good full second listen - is making a very good impression, and I'm looking forward to getting to know it better. later, Miles - -- over a year of feeling guilty about not blogging enough! http://readingpronunciation.blogspot.com/ ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V9 #52 ******************************
