Go get your Cure, Neil Young, and R.E.M.! And they're selling 50 download booster packs for $19.99, which is better than the usual $24.99. I'm going to finally grab the latest Flaming Lips - 20 tracks for 12 download credits. Yeah, I'm wondering how long it's going to be before they raise the prices again. Amie Street has a 25% off credit purchase deal today. Hm...an Amazon check for the Scorchers reveals nothing released after 2008. Details? Looking forward to Jimi Hendrix, Roky Erickson, and heck, maybe the Magnetic Fields, Andy Sex robot Roxxxy looking for action by Tim Hornyak She may have all the charm of flesh-colored silicone, but a negligee-clad rubber doll named Roxxxy is being billed as the first of a legion of sex robots poised to become man's new best friend. Unveiled at the Adult Entertainment Expo in Las Vegas over the weekend, Roxxxy was developed by New Jersey-based True Companion and engineer Douglas Hines, and she's way more than a blow-up doll. She's basically an anatomically correct bot engineered to interact with users by responding to simple conversation through an internal speaker. All responses, though, are prerecorded. Depending on the personality you choose--"Wild Wendy" or "Frigid Farrah" for instance--Roxxxy may purr a metallic, "That gets me hot!" after you introduce a topic like soccer. Getting excited yet? Well, get this. Roxxxy is so soccer-savvy she can even discuss Manchester United. Apparently, she also snores. Another possible detraction--some of her voices sound more like Stephen Hawking's vocal synthesizer than that of a hot human female. Roxxxy also has sensors on various parts of her 5-foot, 7-inch, 120-pound body and can tell when she's being touched. No word yet on whether nibbling her ear drives the machine wild. Hines apparently wants to charge $7,000 to $9,000 for Roxxxy and an attached laptop running its software. He believes, like David Levy, author of "Love and Sex With Robots," that robots can become genuine companions for people by providing intimacy and pleasure. Roxxxy may be just a stiff chatterbox for now. Details? There hasn't been a Scorchers album of new material since 1996. Anything since CLEAR IMPETUOUS MORNING is live or archival, or sometimes both. But here's an excerpt from a Scorchers newsletter from October 2009, and you could always go to http://www.jasonandthescorchers.com for more if you please: "Within the band proper, the word new is an understatement. The past year has seen the band undergo an astounding transformation. For the past ten years, Warner kept the idea alive that JATS could be valid again. Jason was much more circumspect and even downright resistant to any idea of bringing the band back in any real way. However, Warner doggedly kept after the idea and finagled funding to record again. Most importantly, he talked Jason into at least giving the idea a try. "The next step was putting together a dynamite rhythm section. While Fenner Castner and Kenny Ames had done an admirable job filling in for Jeff and Perry, that line-up never quite jelled in the way that it needed to. First Warner brought in Al Collins on bass. He had played with Al for years in the Stacie Collins Band and really felt Al was perfect. Al is a classic rock n roll bassist, much like Jeff Johnson. Warner and Jason decided to give him a try on a May 2008 UK tour that fell into their laps. When Fenner could no longer do the long Europe touring, Jason suggested they try Pontus Snibb from Malmv in Sweden. By all accounts, the tour was a smash success and they decided to bring in Al and Pontus to record the new album. Al and Pontus are now solid members of JATS, although Mauro Magellan (of Georgia Satellites and Homemade Sin fame) will sometimes fill in on drums when needed. Be sure to check out their individual bios on the JATS site. "The new album is called Halcyon Times and will be released the first half of 2010. The exact release dates and record companies are still to be confired. We will talk much more about the new album later, but trust us when we sat that it honors the JATS legacy and takes it to a new dimension. Folks are already talking about Halcyon Times as a career record." later, Miles - -- over a year of feeling guilty about not blogging enough! http://readingpronunciation.blogspot.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Jan 2010 17:45:49 -0500 From: Jenny Grover Subject: Re: [loud-fans] eMusic signs deal with Warner Dave Walker wrote: > Let's hope this one does't come with a price hike like the Sony deal did. > > -d.w. > > If it does, I'm outta there. I found that their typical prices paid averaged about half of what I'm accustomed to. The guy even flat out lied and said some of my titles were "extremely scratched." My stuff is pristine. Always. Tanking CD sales doubtless started the trend, but the economy really put the hurt on everyone. In the Valley, Freakbeat Records should be avoided at all costs when it comes to trading -- it's a nice little shop otherwise -- but CD Trader wasn't bad the last time I was there, which admittedly was last summer. They may have changed since then. Since I got out of debt, the only CDs I've purchased are the Beatles mono and stereo boxes, and even those were bought online. I may not set foot in a record shop until Record Store Day in April... when I am guaranteed to go apeshit with vast sums of money. West Sent from my magical iPhone...
