How does his solo album compare? >>> It is and the CD sounds *very* Grandaddyish, which is a good thing in my book. It's not quite "Sophtware Slump," but I like it a lot. >>> And is Adrian Belew in pop mode, King Crimson mode, pseudo-Bowie mode, or something else this year? >>> It's prog in a power trio format. I can make no claim towards any consensus, but such issues confound me from time to time in some years. Regarding release date, I think anything released between January 1 and December 31 in Year X counts as a Year X record and not a Year Y record. Except of course, that import vs. domestic raises its ponderous little head, along with limited vs. wide release--and more recently, digital vs. hard copy. Regarding content, I believe a record should consist primarily of previously unreleased material to qualify as a Year X record. Not knowing the Bruno record, I can't tell you if it contains mostly previously unreleased material, or mostly previously under-released material. Also, the "unreleased material" dictum works well enough for rock/pop albums, but not so well with jazz albums, where theoretically anyway, no two performances of a given piece come out the same. I lost interest in Freedy some years ago after he cut two of the most amazing albums of the 90's, then slid onward and downward--but the sound samples from the new one intrigued me. Charlotte's 5:55 was of course my Album Of The Year 2007, and this time she's got Beck on her side. Fish, Smoosh, Paula Cole, Mose Allison, Pinetop Perkins, Andy Bell, and Lucy Wainwright Roche all allegedly, at least, have new ones getting ready to go. And for those of you still (inexplicably) attracted to Steve Kilbey, you've got a box set and a collaboration with one Martin Kennedy to anticipate--in the States anyway; the Kennedy set, at least, came out in the UK last year. Engineers - Three Fact Fader --Surprise of the year. a real solid record. Future of the Left - Travels with Myself and Another Mew - No More Stories... --Not as great as "...and the glass handed kites", but still way above most bands. Antony & the Johnsons -- The Crying Light --Hate precious music like this, but I can't deny how good this is. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest --I'll probably like this more after I listen a few more times. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion --Not my favorite of the year, but AC does keep getting better and better. AC Newman - Get Guilty Japandroids - Post-Nothing Horrors - Primary Colours --80's gloom throwbacks -- but I still liked it alot.
