Some of the old standby places are still on St. Marks between 2nd and 3rd Aves: Sounds and Rockit Scientist, with Norman's around the corner on 3rd. Other Music on E. 4th St., between Lafayette and Broadway, is probably the best respected indie record shop still around. Downtown Music Gallery is still soldiering on, with an emphasis on experimental music: I hear they are now at 13 Monroe St., between Catherine & Market Streets in Chinatown. I think Subterranean Records is still on Cornelia St., right near the corner of W. 4th St and 6th Ave in the Village. - Dan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Dec 2009 14:21:08 -0500 From: markwstaples@aol.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] research resource question Lord, I understand that. Money's tighter for me right now than Santa Claus in a x-small spandex jumpsuit. I'm hoping to get a job I'm interviewing for in LA later today, and I don't want to drive that drive--if I get the job I'll have to commute 50 miles each way. I'm hoping I can find an old Geo Metro 3-cylinder (with air bags) in good enough shape to commute in. Haven't been in 3-4 years and I understand much has changed on this front. Any help off line is appreciated. I don't usually get much response on these requests so if you have some thoughts, I'd really appreciate it. I do not, by the way, have the resources to make any kind of dent in terms of gutting the stock of any shops. I saw this in the distance and, lover of mid-century modern architecture and design that I am, immediately found my eatery. The food was okay, but the atmosphere was a visual feast. I've never seen a finer example of Googie. If you're into Googie, I suggest a book called Googie Redux by Alan Hess.
