I agree with this, and obviously Carol Kaye (who played on a zillion 60s hits) must be on any such list. Other names that are springing to mind are Tal Wilkenfeld, Me'Shell Ndegeocello, Esperanza Spalding, Sara Lee, and Georgie Born, although I've only listened to the last two to any extent. - - -- Tim Walters | http://doubtfulpalace.com - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Dec 2009 21:18:58 EST From: AWeiss4338@aol.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] A few indie-pop (and beyond) questions to ponder My vote is all of them, and add Kim Gordon. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Dec 2009 12:35:57 -0500 From: Chris Hornbostel Subject: Re: [loud-fans] A few indie-pop (and beyond) questions to ponder More amazing girls on bass: Joyce Raskin of Scarce "Why's she got a foam rubber pad glued to the back of her bass?" a buddy asked me before a Scarce show. I've seen Joyce literally shred her hand playing and continue to go nuts on bass, even while bleeding like crazy. Laurie Stirratt of Blue Mountain. Her twin brother John's in Wilco; Laurie's a fine bassist and a terrific vocalist as well. Maybe he wanted someone who played in a more African style, like... Her style is much dirtier/ more aggressive/ more off-kilter than Squire's, so I'm not sure why I mentioned him. Babe the Blue Ox's best album, to my tastes, is 'the Way We Were', although any of their albums feature excellent bass playing.... Kitty Brazelton does excellent bass work on her album 'What is it Like to be a Bat?'. I guess my other nominees would be the same ones already covered.
