If it's fashionable to be whiny about unacknowledged messages, did anyone ever check out Invisible Cities or Hussalonia? their records are pretty much all free to download, so low risk if you don't like 'em as much as I did. And right now I'm keen on the in-progress sophomore record from Hello Dragon (hellodragonmusic.com). I am somewhat embarrassed to like a band with "dragon" in the name, but it's more-or-less former Boston band Helicopter Helicopter transplanted to LA -- Different rhythm section, but same singers/writers. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Nov 2009 11:02:18 -0800 From: "Joseph M. I like the Invisible Cities record. Need to check out Hussalonia. And I was thinking it had something to do with the soundtrack of the new Nic Cage remake (or whatever it is) of said movie. > If it's fashionable to be whiny about unacknowledged messages, did > anyone ever check out Invisible Cities or Hussalonia? I downloaded the Invisible Cities album, which was interesting but probably not something I'll return to very often. I was initially daunted by the sheer volume of Hussalonia recordings and so never actually sampled them until now. I like what I hear - the definition of "quirky" (but not in an annoying Fiery Furnaces kind of way). Knowing what you know of my sometimes-too-mainstream-for-this-list leanings, what's the best overall album for me to download? > And right now I'm keen on the in-progress > sophomore record from Hello Dragon (hellodragonmusic.com). I've downloaded the in-progress stuff so we'll see how that goes. Speaking of dragons, that reminds me of the time in high school when my only friend Moozer and I drove down to the local Castle Records to pick up the album DRAMA by Yes, which Moozer really had to have because he loved progressive rock especially if it had drawings of dragons on the album covers and I wanted to checkit out because it was supposed to have those Buggles guys on it taking over for Wakeman and the whiny voiced guy, but when we were cruising towards the mall in the silver Datsun Z28 his dad picked up for him used for $500 at a police auction, some jocks from our class threw packages of Space Food Sticks at his windshield, causing him to swerve into a fire hydrant. I was okay (a little wet) but The Mooze was in traction for 3 months and I never did find out what he thought of DRAMA, especially since he stopped talking to me after he quit smoking the wacky weed and started dating the bleached-blond prom queen. I was interested in the comment you made about Bettie Serveert. I didn't think it sounded much like them, but it did remind me a lot of Bauer the duo formed by Berend Dubbe when he left - you guessed it - Bettie Serveert! Check out Baueresque or their live CD with the Metropole Orchestra. I don't know how easy these will be get hold of on your side of the pond, but I'm sure somewhere will have sound clips at the very least. Thanks, Richard! If anyone wants to keep score, when I played Bad Lieutenant a little louder, I noticed pitch correction all over the darned thing. I can't explain it, but vocals that are (slightly) out of tune bother me a lot less than vocals that are (noticably) pitch-corrected. Anyway, I'm withdrawing any implied endorsement of Bad Lieutenant on this count. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Nov 2009 18:02:17 -0500 From: Jenny Grover Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Bad Lieutenant (again) outbound-only email address wrote: > If it's fashionable to be whiny about unacknowledged messages, did > anyone ever check out Invisible Cities or Hussalonia? I downloaded Invisible Cities. I think I couldn't get Hussalonia to work for some reason. IC is okay. I probably won't listen to it much, tho, because it has too much competition on my hard drive of things I like better.
