I find it very ploddy and dull. I long for the days of Pattinson and de Freitas who could back up the modulating-between-2-chords verses and Mac pomposity with parts that subtly supported and enriched everything else. This album may as well have been recorded with Mac and Will playing and singing along to a backing track programmed into Cubase or Pro Tools. Before anyone says it isn't THAT bad, I agree that in small doses some songs are OK. Indeed, had this been made by someone I hadn't heard before I may have had a different reaction, but for the band that made those fine 80s albums, this, along with much of their post-reformation stuff is poor by comparison. Still, they've got my money so job done! - --- On Mon, 23/11/09, Miles Goosens wrote: From: Miles Goosens Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Re: Bad Lieutenant (again) To: loud-fans@smoe.org Date: Monday, 23 November, 2009, 12:13 On Sun, Nov 22, 2009 at 9:31 PM, wrote: > I think it does for more regular type music consumers. I meant my first post with the "again" in the subject line that I sent yesterday. It never showed up after I sent it, so, a good while later, (not sure how long exactly--a long time) I copied and pasted it and resent it with that note at the top, instead of simply forwarding it. As for that original post, I didn't explain it was a New Order side project. I made the assumption that my references to it would be adequate, as I assumed it is an album that would be in the Loudfan radar. I suppose I shouldn't have made that assumption. As for Coupland, it's Douglas, not Dougass. His work excites me, and I want others to be excited, too. When I do a radio show, I always make a point to play at least one Scott Miller song in the show. I try to play at least one Game Theory and one Loud Family track. I want others to like his work as much as I. But, a negative reaction is better than none at all--that means it resonated with you at least enough to annoy you, instead of leaving you cold. The character of Serge in his new book is an asshole. I thought that passage was pretty harsh--but I think it's very well-written. Coupland is showing what an asshole Serge is (but more would be needed than I sent to get a context). When I do a show, if they don't like the Scott songs I play, they can turn the volume down. And, you can simply scan down to my credit for whatever I'm quoting and see if it's something you care to read. I'm sometimes woefully behind on what the better known indie/post indie (did I just coin a phrase?) artists are doing, and the real mainstream might as well not exist most of the time in my world. I never heard of Bad Lieutenant till on this list, and still haven't had a chance to check it/them out. I only found out a couple of days ago just who Them Crooked Vultures is! That's one that really should have been right on my main radar screen. I didn't realize the new Echo & B-men was actually "new", I just figured it was another re-master of old stuff. So, yeah, a bit of specificity when one is mentioning albums and bands is helpful to the informationally challenged among us. As for new stuff not mentioned above, I can't wait to get my hands on the new Black Hollies album "Softly Towards the Light"! I would have it already if eMusic didn't have it and I wasn't waiting for my downloads (have to spread those devalued pennies on the thin side in order to afford stuff I can't get so cheap and easy). I heard "Number Ten Girl" first, on 3wk, and I literally just stopped whatever it was I was doing and rushed over to the scroll to see what it was. I then went into embarrassing squeal and dance of absolute music obsessed joy mode and immediately went and looked for it online. While I am a ravenous music feeder, I don't go quite that flipty very many times a year. I did listen through it on Lala (that one free listen feature is an awesome tool for making decisions and has begun to figure hugely into what I do and don't plunk down my devalued dime for), and those guys are one of the two best 60s psych revivalist bands out there, the other being the Embrooks, and I'm not sure if they're still together or not. Both of those bands make it sound easy and genuine, but still keep it fresh and interesting, not cheesy or tongue-in-cheek. I think that's difficult for revivalist-type bands to do.
