Hey strangers - I've got a few that I haven't seen mentioned yet (weaselly phrasing is because I'm not sure I'm getting all my list mail in order). My personal favorite, Sun Ra, is more known for being from another planet than for being an amazing pianist and bandleader; he was of course all three. There are a ton of great albums with the Arkestra, but if you just want to check out his playing start with "Solo Piano Recital: Teatro la Fenice Venizia." He is very eMusic-available, in general. Of the younger guys, I'm a huge, huge fan of Jason Moran; I've been too lazy to pick up his last few CDs, but every one I own is fantastic. He's got this great angular, impressionistic style that (this is very unusual for me and jazz guys under 50) never makes me want to go listen to whoever did it first 40 years ago instead. He's got a lot of free MP3s at his site: http://www.jasonmoran.com/mp3.html. That's how much I paid for the Rough Trade CDs in '87! Difference is, that was in 1987 dollars and they were IMPORTS. What gives with the hefty price? NO bonus disc as far as I can tell. The only one I want is MEAT IS MURDER, since the original sounds like it was recorded in a meat packing plant on Certron tape. Morrissey doesn't approve of these reissues, but Marr oversaw the remastering, so he can get over it. If neither of them had anything to do with 'em, I WOULD avoid them. - --Mark **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. See yours in just 2 easy steps!
