[Ian Runeckles Subject: Re: [loud-fans] jazz piano recommendations? Brilliant Corners is excellent - I'd also suggest Genius Of Modern Music Vols 1 &2 (how modest to title your albums that!). Indispensable is At Carnegie Hall with John Coltrane. Other pianists that haven't been mentioned so far ( think): Horace Silver - start with Song For My Father and progress with any of his Blue Notes - there are loads of em Fingerpopping, Cape Verdean Blues, Jody Grind, Horace Scope Herbie Hancock - the early Blue Notes are great - Maiden Voyage, Taking Off, Empirean Isles, Speak Like A Child Sonny Clark - another Blue Note favourite - Cool Strutting is probably the best although all of his stuff is good, Leaping and Loping, Sonny's Crib, Dial S For Sonny... Art Tatum - God Is In The House is quite incredible Keith Jarrett - Koln Concert is solo piano and amazing, there's also a nice collection of his Impulse work which is a good introduction An off the wall choice - Mark Springer - founding mmeber of the laete lamented and very wonderful Rip, Rig and Panic - has made a bunch of very interesting avant garde-ish mainly solo piano works - the early Menu,Eye and Piano are good if you can get hold of them, the more recent Solo Situation is accessible and fine. Not sure what the prices are like tin the US but Blue Notes are available at pretty good prices on CD in the UK - I've picked up loads for under #5.
