Funny- back in the day, Holsapple was the more approachable everyman and  
Stamey the arch one (although Rigby could also be a smartass).  But I agree  
from recent conversations that Chris has mellowed with age.

Peter is  kind of intimidating--very sharp and  witty!  Also, he knew all  
about Gil--follows his blog.  Chris Stamey  is nice--I can tell  he's the 
zeta to Peter's alpha (and he's a friend of  Scott's).

Subject: [loud-fans] Karate (the band, of course)

This summer I have been listening a lot to Karate, Geoff Farina's old band from Boston.  I had never heard of them before recently, and I was skeptical at first -- not my usual cup o' tea, with all their jazzy virtuosity.  But they have grown on me a lot.  They all play with quite a bit of restraint.  I like my guitar heroes to be a little spotlight-shy, as I'm more interested in composition than gymnastics.  

I've only heard two of their albums, UNSOLVED (2000) and SOME BOOTS (2002).  About half the songs I've heard make nice background music but don't really grab me.  The other half do, and a couple of them, "Small Fires" and "Corduroy", have really gotten to me.  I have come to appreciate their clean-cool "post-rock" (as one reviewer dubbed it) minimalism, as a true three-piece with hardly any over-dubs.  

It's also been kind of interesting in that this is the first band I've gotten into from downloads off iTunes.  Doing it this way feels less solid, less real than the familiar experience of finding CDs, holding them in your hand, reading the packaging before you hear it, etc.  Kind of odd -- almost makes me wish I had waited until I could find the CDs, or mail-ordered them.

Anyway, I know it's been forever since I posted here -- so "hi" to everyone who still remembers me -- but I figured there would be some people with opinions on Karate and/or the iTunes thing.  Has anyone heard any of Geoff Farina's solo work or current band, Glorytellers?  Both seem rather different from Karate.
