They were just great. I got to talk to Peter and Chris some afterwards. Peter is kind of intimidating--very sharp and witty! Also, he knew all about Gil--follows his blog. Chris Stamey is nice--I can tell he's the zeta to Peter's alpha (and he's a friend of Scott's). They both have that old Southern Chapel Hillness to them (a rapidly dying breed)--kind of hard to describe--think tortoise shell, seersucker and manners. When I walked into the studio with my vinyl copy of THE SOUND OF MUSIC, Peter looked at me and said, "Now I know THAT record" and welcomed me. I said, "Please satisfy my inner teen and sign it later?" (I don't like the covers of REPERCUSSION or STANDS FOR DECIBELS, but always thought TSOM was a great cover, even if it is Stamey-free). By the time I got to the studio, they were moments away from playing, and they are Everly Brothersish and smooth as glass, that is for certain. I was hoping they'd do they're Byrds cover from MAVERICKS, but it didn't happen. Oh well. Nothing ever came of me keeping time for them. I told Joe that, when he mentioned it to me, about maybe me doing so, since their drummer couldn't come, that HE'D have to suggest it, as I would certainly not! He didn't, and, to be honest, it was kind of a relief! Early excitement slowly escalated into mild stage fright when I thought about it! I was too late to the studio for that to happen anyway. Peter asked me if I was coming to see them in Asheville that night, and I said I had to work, and he kind of rolled his eyes, and then I retorted with, "Hey, I just drove 60 miles to see you!" and Chris Stamey stopped sipping water at the water fountain and said, "Really?" Really. Well worth the trip to me. - --Mark p.s. Holsapple these days has embraced the Gil Ray look--bald with moustache and goatee, but instead of "gramps" glasses he wears tortoise shell Wayfarer framed eyeglasses--very cool looking dude **************Summer concert season is here!
