With voices like Donnette's, especially as used on the Hex albums, the register lends towards such descriptors. Having said that, angelic would be more often used, in my experience, for boy sopranos rather than women. In GT, on the occasions she sang lead, Donnette sang pretty full on. For a lot of Hex songs there was a much more ethereal quality that they seemed to be aiming for. At that stage I liked it, but after hearing a few Kilbey-produced albums by solo women I got a bit tired of hearing the same things rehashed - something that I've seldom come across in other areas of his stuff.I agree to some extent with both camps on the Scott singing point. Especially in GT there were a few songs where he seemed to be trying too hard to make the amazing melody he'd written work. No-one else was likely to be able to sing the entire thing with the same charm/style/emotion, but there are bits of songs which don't suit his voice entirely, or seem strained. Most of the time though, I wouldn't want to have had anyone else singing them. Maybe from a purists point of view someone could have sung them 'better', but that's an entirely subjective assessment. As has been mentioned, lots of famous singers are very idiosyncratic, and stand out and are loved for precisely that reason. I used to be of the oft quoted opinion about Dylan until I listened to him a lot and started to get what my mates had been telling me for years. I guess all of this is very interesting to me because this is where I came in - - I first became aware of GT because of the KIlbey connection. If it hadn't happened I may well have a big hole in my music collection! - --- On Sun, 14/6/09, Tom Marcinko wrote: From: Tom Marcinko Subject: Re: BEHIND the MUUUUSIC Re: Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Game Theory in Kilby/Church bio To: loud-fans@smoe.org Date: Sunday, 14 June, 2009, 9:06 PM Am I the only guy here who thinks that "stunning, angelic" is code for "kinda hot"? LOL! Maybe some truth in that, but at times I think she displayed both. I've mentioned this before, but I think her performance on "Wyoming" is absolutely stunning. When she did sing "full on", I think (esp. live) her voice could get a bit shrill, but frankly, our on-stage volume was so blisteringly loud, it was really difficult to sing and hear the monitors - my left ear - where my monitors were normally situated - , still rings to this day! And there is no denying that she was not kinda, but very hot! Gil She really had her own look back in th' day--kind of a lacy/gauzy stark look offset with leather and dramatic makeup. I wonder if she ever sold her GT era guitar she had for sale some years ago when she needed some money. I wonder who has it now (I'm guessing a male fan with sizable disposable income in his forties). - --Mark **************Choose the home loan that saves you the most $$$. SMOKING KILLS by Ken Stringfellow's side project, the Disciplines, is good stuff if you are a Posies fan. It's louder than the Posies, but I'd have to say it's garage-y rather than "Amazing Disgrace"-angry. Great riffs, songwriting, and solos throughout. I take it this is his Oslo band. It's on eMusic, so worth checking out for those inclined.
