Reading some of the criticism his singing has received over the years baffles me. I've been a fan of his singing since _RN_ but most folks in my life don't share my cultured appreciation. :D R. Quality women (excluding any on this list, of course) had the same reaction to Game Theory that a guy would have to discovering Joni Mitchell's "Blue" playing when he arrived to pick up his date. On the other hand, Plan 9 finally attempted bringing in a more traditional rock frontman, and that didn't make a difference for them. Made for a pretty good album, though. ************** Shop Dellbs full line of Laptops now starting at $349! Donnette perhaps has a stronger technical voice, but Scott's voice (and performances) was better suited to the intellectual and emotional content of his songs. I've always liked Scott's singing voice, though admittedly, he has limited range. I played the live track on the SLOUCHING TOWARDS Didion (ha-ha) e.p. yesterday on my radio show--there's a spot on "Erica's Word" that his singing voice just dizzolves for a second--but it adds to the charm factor of a live in-studio recording. I liked Donette on the (first) hex record, but not on GT songs. I always prefer Scott's vocals to anyone's. Btw, the new Church and new Kilbey record PAINKILLER are good, though I prefer virtual side 1 on PAINKILLER. (the second "side" is a different vibe) Now if I could just find that new BIcycles CD without having to order it online (the distributor doesn't deal with my local store), - --Mark **************Shop Dellbs full line of Laptops now starting at $349! The 2007 Shout Factory one is awful (noticeable glitches, general lifelessness), which is weird, because the contemporaneous Shout Factory remixes of Trilogy and the s/t are really good. My BSS disc is the old '93 Victory one, which is supposed to just be the album mix, not a remix, but it sounds a tad bright to me (my only complaint about it. Yeah, I suppose I could just boost the bass). Basically, I'm looking for good frequency balance, a wide dynamic range, clarity, little or nothing in the way of tweaking the mix in an effort to make it sound more up-to-date, or "loud", or change emphases (I don't want it to be like the Murmur remix, where it's an interesting alternate mix, but too unlike the original mix to ever replace it). Any suggestions? Just listenable and enjoyable. Others have commented on her first Hex album, and I just would like to add, that I thought that parts of the album were a bit shallow (like Diviner, after you figure out the lyrics (doesn't take too long)). This would be a problem, because she appeared to be aiming for a "depth" of some kind. In that vein, it didn't do anything for me. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Jun 2009 00:44:09 -0400 From: Jenny Grover Subject: Re: [loud-fans] elp help Andrew Hamlin wrote: > Sanctuary did release a triple-disc deluxe reissue--the original mix, > Super Audio CD in surround sound, and a third disc of alternate takes > and mixes. Andy. I looked into that set you suggested and people are complaining it's even brighter sounding than the Sanctuary release, with the mid-range too boosted, and too much compression on it. Howsomever, two people in the "too bright" camp suggested hunting down the original 1990 Atlantic CD release, which apparently can be had used for the princely sum of, like, 25 cents. That kind of gamble I think can afford.
