And Simon Reynolds picked SOLID AIR for a Desert Island Disc, Andy You've been taking your time, And you've been living on solid air You've been walking the line, And you've been living on solid air Don't know what's going 'round inside And I can tell you that it's hard to hide When you're living on solid air You've been painting the blues And you've been looking through solid air You've been seeing it through And you've been looking through solid air Don't know what's going 'round in your mind And I can tell you don't like what you find When you're moving through solid air I know you, I love you And I can be your friend, I can follow you anywhere Even through solid air You've been stoning it cold, You've been living on solid air You've been finding it cold, You've been living on solid air I don't know what's going on inside I can tell you that it's hard to hide When you're living on solid air You've been getting too deep, You've been living on solid air You've been missing your sleep And you've been moving through solid air I don't know what's going on in your mind But I know you don't like what you find When you're moving through solid air You've been walking your line, You've been walking on solid air You've been taking your time But you've been walking on solid air Don't know what's going on inside But I can tell you that it's hard to hide When you're living on solid air - --John Martyn, "Solid Air", from http://www.lyricsfreak.com/j/john+martyn/solid+air_20233460.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 01 Feb 2009 17:16:42 -0500 From: "Paul King" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] New Crappy Album covers Roayl Trux might not make the cut (they are indie/noise rock) (although I am thinking about it). I have a rule that I don't allow most heavy metal/hard rock/punk album covers on my blog, because we _expect_ most of them to be shocking and even hard to look at. Fans might even go out of their way to buy it for that reason. The tastelessness was intentional. If RTX had just a striaght photo of themselves on the cover rather than a broken toilet with something ungodly growing in it, the cult audience they are after would probably give them a miss. This is the reason that the countless Scorpions album covers that are out there have never been mentioned on my blog (Virgin Killer, and, whatever the name is of that bubblegum album cover they did -- oh yeah, Lovedrive -- are staples of many crappy album blogs). I am on two minds about Love Grenade, and the reason is that it *could* make it if I think it is in just plain bad taste. Judging by the sales cited in Wikipedia, it looks like the fans saw it that way, also. I take it you are referring to the pointless and mysogynistic portrayal of the nude female on the pre-release version. Although the other design with the pink ribbon on the grenade has a high tackiness factor to it also, as well as sending a very confusing message. Both could work, actually, for different reasons. I was starting to look for bad covers by bigger acts, but that one is a hard slog for reasons stated above. It is so much easier to poke fun at albums that have at most a tangential association with fame and show evidence that their tastelessness was done out of cluelessness more than out of any intention. And "Arm of Roger" looks hilarious on a lot of levels, some of which I have trouble putting into words. Tastefully done, but in the final analysis: WTF? I just wish there was a slightly bigger image available. The image Daniel's link points to lacks some detail. Thanks for everyone's contributions!
