That's because I do a better job of collating than they do. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Jan 2009 18:04:58 -0800 From: Daniel Vallor Subject: [loud-fans] Re: Winter Hours I really loved Winter Hours Wait 'til The Morning EP but thought their Chrysalis album was ok. I'm excited about the tribute because it's got the first new Yung Wu recording in 20 years as well as one from Brenda from The Feelies' Wild Carnation, something from Dumptruck's Seth Tiven as well as one from a new band East Of Venus who are Michael from Winter Hours, Glenn Mercer and Stan Demeski from The Feelies and Rob Norris from The Bongos (Stan was their original drummer when they were Ward 8). What Gil didn't mention in his note about Richmond VA was that at the time we played with Winter Hours they were, and may well remain, the most unpleasant bunch we ever played with on tour (at least when I was touring with GT). They were slated to open for Game Theory and had just one EP out (I think called Churches). Game Theory were touring supporting Real Nighttime and had won the best new band thing on CMJ the prior year and were drawing okay. It was as if some giant rock stars had been tricked into opening for some local band with no record or following. I've since met guitarist Michael again at his record shop in NYC and he was a perfectly genial guy, but that night to attitude flowed like a river and it turned into a particularly difficult evening as the club owner tried to work to satiate Winter Hours while Game Theory did our best to be polite. Now I'm sure every band has a really bad day now and again, but this was a low in all my touring experiences. That said, it didn't sour me on the second record when it came out and as far as bands coming in the wake of REM (viz REM sounding bands), it doesn't get much better than Hyacinth Girl and the title song from Wait 'til The Morning. - - Dan Vallor (still glowing a little after my first album made #916 on 2002's Pazz n Jop chart...woo hoo!
