And wow, that's as *striking* as anything I heard last year, for sure. I had it on while making breakfast with my daughter this morning, and she liked it, too, so there's the 1.5-year-old demographic weighing in. She also liked the new Saxon album I played after that, though, so let's just say she's not a purist (yet). Interesting question whether Stern qualifies as "metal". My internal instinctive metal-or-not meter says "definitely not". But if you try to argue the question rationally, I think it comes down to irresolvable distinctions between what things *characterize" metal and what things *define* it. Stern's shredding clearly derives from metal tradition. The drumming comes from somewhere between metal and post-rock. The vocal style is a good case for Kill Rock Stars being a genre as well as a label. And I guess for me this adds up to an overall effect that is more art-experiment than evil-power. But what I really thought, while listening, was "80s Jane Sibbery crossed with Mecca Normal". glenn On Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 9:35 PM, glenn mcdonald wrote: > Kingfisher Sky is a little jazzy for me, but in kind of that vein you > might like Dalriada (Hungary) and Brave (DC). > > Hadn't gotten around to investigating Marnie Stern yet.
