If I were to pick a Lucinda Williams song, it would surely be "Side of the Road"; for once the phrase "achingly beautiful" is fully justified. There are some songs, like Kirsty MacColl's "Free World" and The Smiths' "Stop Me.." where I love the circular quality of the guitar and find it beautiful. No "Norwegian Wood"? :-) Holly ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Dec 2008 21:57:08 -0500 From: "Paul King" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] most beautiful song > I'm sure I've missed a lot, but no "Candle in the Wind? At least to me. I actually feel that way of most of what the Beatles, Elton John, and Barry Manilow did in the way of love tunes or blockbuster hit songs. To get a favourite Elton John tune, I have to leave the beaten track and think of songs like "Gray Seal" or "I Feel Like a Bullet". Manilow is harder to do this with. Remember, Manilow wrote advertising jingles for a living (MacDonalds "You deserve a break today", and I think Pepsi ("Join the Pepsi people") are two big examples), and so all of his music had a kind of instant cliche quality to it, I think. As for the Beatles, it's hard to think of even a non-hit that doesn't feel like a cliche. It's not the Beatles' fault. They were wildly famous, and so much of their music has been absorbed as a part of popular culture. This is why I have had to venture away from the beaten path when it comes to popular music. When a song becomes popular, it is overplayed, then it becomes a cliche casualty. That feeling you had for it at the beginning wears off. So, venturing somewhat (but not entirely) from Top-40: Regenisraen, by Game Theory Room For One More, Honey, by Game Theory Like a Lover, Like a Song, by April Wine The Killing Moon, by Echo and the Bunnymen Watermark, by Enya The Anchor, by Swans Way Feelings Fall, by The Water Walk On Saturday Afternoons in 1963, by Rikki-Lee Jones More, More, More, by Carmel Birdland, by The Manhattan Transfer Paul King ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Dec 2008 22:33:59 -0500 From: "Paul King" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] most beautiful song I almost forgot "Glittering Cloud" by Imogen Heap > > I'm sure I've missed a lot, but no "Candle in the Wind?
