Kevin Doyle" Subject: [loud-fans] dawg music postscript Thanks to all who responded to the request for dawg music; my show and my listeners will be immeasurably enriched by your generosity. I've wondered whether the response would have been nearly as overwhelming had I requested songs about felines. That, I think, would have presented quite a greater challenge. There aren't nearly as many songs about cats; there is "Stray Cat Strut," and then there are some good songs, though none immediately come to mind. A DJ friend used to put forth the proposition that baseball is inherently superior to football as a sport, and the proof lies in the fact that there are more good baseball songs than football songs. (She spoke of American football, of course.) She is undoubtedly correct -- that is, that the baseball songs outnumber the football songs. In fact, I wonder if anyone can name a single football song other than "Football Rap" by DJ Rappenstein on Rhino's football- shaped, brown-vinyl single of years ago. Applying this logic, I wonder what this says about the relative superiority of the feline and canine species? (Hearing a coyote in the distance, it occurs to me that we have left out songs about wolves and coyotes in our pursuit of what I have termed "dawg music." I have made an effort below to rectify this.) Perhaps it says nothing about the species' relative standing in any Great Chain of Being but quite a lot about the feelings they engender in the songwriters who, after all, are the ones responsible for writing the songs, not the creatures themselves. Those with any thoughts on this matter are invited to weigh in. I close with the words of the wise but anonymous person who said, "Cats look down on you, dogs look up to you, but pigs are equal."
