I haven't heard the new one, though I was surprised it had been so long since a proper Matthew Sweet release. I guess between the Thorns (some wag, maybe here, tickled me with the drop-dead-accurate Ambrosia comparison) and the Sweet/Hoffs covers albums, he didn't seem very absent. I'm the weirdo who still likes ALTERED BEAST best, and I had to have the dino-green colored cover. And I think the best album the GIRLFRIEND band made was Lloyd Cole's wonderful self-titled one (or maybe it's called "X," heck, 18 years later and I still don't know for sure). But it's just the ten tracks on the album, without any bonus tracks, which is a shame, because there were some stellar b-sides on that album -- covers of "Egyptian Reggae" and "Dancing Barefoot" (sung by Brenda). > Could someone explain to him, though--nicely, of course--that throwing > an "edit" into "Down By The River" just plain goes against nature? DECADE has "edits" of both "Down By The River" and "Cowgirl In the Sand", which I like better than the originals, because it saves me from clicking the next button after nine minutes. (It's like Joe Biden's speech last night at the DNC "Good speech Joe..let's wrap it up!"). The Bye Bye Blackbirds have been threatening to cover EVERYBODY KNOWS THIS IS NOWHERE from start to finish for awhile, but I've only heard them do the first two songs ("Cinnamon Girl" and the title track). I like Lloyd Cole's first solo album just fine, but think the best album by the GIRLFRIEND band was Matthew Sweet's GIRLFRIEND. - -Steve ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Aug 2008 15:14:31 -0400 From: "outbound-only email address" Subject: [loud-fans] On second thought... Guess I'm a weirdo too, then. Weirdos love company... or maybe they don't, based on at least one ALTERED BEAST song. So this Sweet talkin' made me whip out AB during my just-completed errand run. Though I love this album, it was the first time I'd given it a spin in a while. My fandom remains undiminished, but on this listen, it struck me how several of the tunes on the early part of the album have what would today be described as a distinct Americana flavor. I guess the fuzzed-out rockin' geetars that predominate in my memory had overshadowed that element... plus Sweet and Richard Dashut make it a homogenous part of those particular songs rather than a distraction, which I think is a very good thing. But if he'd come up with those songs five years later, the album would have been produced/ruined by the Twangtrust, prolly... later, Miles ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Aug 2008 17:29:57 -0400 From: Jenny Grover Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Sweet Feelies Markwstaples@aol.com wrote: > But, I don't shower with my dog. I am surprised no one had mentioned any of the crappy albums that are now collectors items, most notably the compilation called "Shaky Sharks" in #16, posted some weeks ago: http://strider01.wordpress.com/2008/08/03/crappy-album-cover-16-bad-promos/ Was anyone out there a fan of Echo and the Bunnymen? Not bad for a comp that was only intended to sell jeans. I agree, Tom, that "The Stellar Unit" album does have an SCTV aura to it. As for where I got these, well, tons of sources, most of whom I don't remember offhand. When it occurred to me that some of these places I got images from may be commercial sites with their own books to sell, I placed a link inside the image to the originating website from there on in. But I couldn't go back and do that for everyone, since some of these images have been sitting on my hard drive for over 2 years with no attribution, and no memory of where they came from. So, it ended up that there were three main sources that were credited: bizarrerecords.com, a blog called "Tacky Raccoons" (on Wordpress) (who said he actually didn't care if he was credited, but I thought his collection was quite unique), and allmusic.com (for at least one album, the updated cover for the Village People's "Renaissance" album). Yes he did. I got him a job there right after he moved down from Sacramento. It was just a temporary thing for him...he had a degree in electrical engineering (I believe), but GT was going to go on tour and he put his real career on hold for just this bit. I'm pretty sure he enjoyed parts of his time at City Hall Recs - in particular, I think that's where he discovered the Legendary Stardust Cowboy! I listened to a couple of Walker Brothers tracks on YouTube that were, apparently, minor hits the U.S. but that I've never heard in my life. Scott Walker's recent solo work is a whole 'nother thing. In giving his album _Tilt_ my #2 vote for best album of 1995, second only to Alanis' debut, I said "As oblique and alien as Jagged Little Pill is impassioned and human, this is a record we should keep extra copies of around to give to arriving extraterrestrials, if only because maybe they'll be able to make more sense of it than we can." The 2006 album _The Drift_ is in some ways even stranger, but I'd try them in order.
