Steve: >> Enigma was essentially a AAA version of Capitol and they had a couple of bands (Poison and the Smithereens) break through while Game Theory was on the label. I'm pretty sure "Erica's Word" (for example) could have become an MTV/video hit with the right level of luck (and promotion). << One of the saddest ironies of the what-sticks-to-the-wall approach is that the success of Poison (even more than other label mates like The Smithereens; I think Poison's numbers were bigger than Smithereens' numbers on Enigma) negatively impacts the chances of everybody else on the label. The acts that have already proven their success draw the vast majority of the promo resources and everyone else is pretty much stiffed. On the bright side, at least Scott Miller isn't whoring himself on some Bravo show like "The New Wave of Love" (or "Exactly Who I'm Trying Not to Date," maybe). Have we talked about Jen Trynin's recent book "Everything I'm Cracked Up to Be" round here? It's one of the very best books about the music industry I've ever read. Also one of the most entertaining. And pretty relevant. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Aug 2008 10:16:57 -0500 From: Chris Prew Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Re: Was Jam, now SSWMCP On Aug 20, 2008, at 5:30 PM, Andrew Hamlin wrote: >> My exact experience in college radio, where I was also program >> director. We'd play Game Theory, Replacements, Huskers, Cocteaus, Feelies etc. And we had 3 "new" songs by dreary AOR artists we had to play each hour. Anybody rememeber "Jimmy Davis and Junction"? I do, unfortunately, since I played their one single like 50 times. Most DJ's there didn't bother with them (or filling out FCC logs, or top of the hour IDs, for that matter), but I, being a good little mommas boy, grudgingly played them. But it worked out -- since I played by the rules, the station manager rewarded me with "college drive time" my senior year -- 6 to 10 pm study time, which was great fun. I'd spend half the evening on the phone trying to get dates with girls phoning in requests. Chris P.S. Got a new app for my Mac -- iVolume. It normalizes all the volume on all your Mp3s. Kicks 'Sound Check's" tail, which never worked very well. Seriously, its really nice NOT having to adjust the volume in my car after every song. Its $29 but well worth it. If you're on windows, theres a freeware app called "Mp3gain" which supposedly does the same thing. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Aug 2008 13:14:31 -0700 (PDT) From: robert toren Subject: [loud-fans] Re: Was Jam, now SSWMCP From: "Dave Walker" > In my circle of friends (undergrad, mid-late 80s) "Erica's Word" was >> the "hit" (MTV 120 Minutes/college radio) that put Game Theory on >> everyone's radar. I still do such segues--i.e. "Balloon Man" by Robyn Hitchcock to 99 Luftbalons by Nena to Up, Up and Away by The Fifth Dimension. It's the fun of doing these kinds of transitions that make it all worthwhile. - --Mark **************It's only a deal if it's where you want to go. Find your travel deal here.
