Based on their rep I've been wanting to check out the Jam. Based on Amazon recommendations I got Sound Affects, and after repeated listenings like it quite a bit - esp, of course, the amazingly catchy That's Entertainment! I want to get a couple more CDs, and have seen them discussed here - was there a consensus re the top 3 Jam albums? Thanks in advance, Robert who recently uploaded an experimental video of Nine Lives to Rigel Five to youtube that combines a live video with the studio audio. What a fine fucking song! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zU04XQOMabM ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Aug 2008 19:37:42 +0100 (BST) From: Richard Blatherwick Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Jam for beginners? The critics generally regard All Mod Cons as the band's masterpeice, and I would agree that it is a damn fine album. My only quibble would be that I think that Setting Sons - the album between it and Sound Affects - is even more consistently brilliant (to my mind only let down by the cover of Heatwave that closes the album). Those 3 albums comprise their album output from the period a lot of people consider to be their prime - In The City & Modern World are much more of a punk and 60s r'n'b mix, while The Gift shows signs of Weller's increasing fascination with Motown and other sounds. They've all got good songs on, but to my mind contain a few more misses among their tracks. The other thing to remember about The Jam is that they were very much a singles band. Some of their best singles never made it onto albums, and so you might want to consider a compilation such as Snap in order to hear songs such as Going Underground and Strange Town. And to further complicate things some great songs weren't even the a-side of the single! When they were good they were that good! Hope this of some help. I think SNAP is no longer in print, but there's another collection that is--maybe two (20th Century Masters I think has them covered). I think ALL MOD CONS and SOUND AFFECTS are fantastique, but, I think I would skip SETTING SONS and go with THIS IS THE MODERN WORLD, merely for the fact that it has "Life From a Window" on it--my favorite Jam song. Collectors' Choice put out AMC and TITMW on the same disc about 5 or 6 years back. If you wanted to get one from each Jam period, I'd go with TITMW, SA, then The GIFT--that way, you'd get punk, mid-period songwriting Weller introspection peak, then Motown fascination that later bloomed more fully in Style Council and solo. You could cheat and get the twofer on Collector's Choice, then SA, then THE GIFT. I may like TG more than some because it was my first exposure to the band. I bought a cut-out of the "Beat Surrender" 12" at Camelot Music in early 1983 with lawn-mowing money (headed to the Greenville Mall on my learner's permit, so had to be back before dark or my Oldsmobile Starfire turned into a pumpkin and my ass turned to grass--lol), so it has some sentimental value to me--the first for me was the last, and then I got COMPACT SNAP and then bought individual albums. Whatever you decide, you'll love what you hear and you'll be glad you went aurally digging. If you are wary on buying TITMW, I'll gladly burn it for you. - --Mark **************Looking for a car that's sporty, fun and fits in your budget? Read reviews on AOL Autos. Another week, another plug. And, I wouldn't be wasting my time doing this if wasn't getting support from this list (thanks a bunch) and other general stragglers to my blog. I've gotten close to 2000 hits in the past two weeks, mostly hits to the pages for my discussions on album covers. http://wordpress.com/tag/crappy-album-covers/ And in the admittedly quick-and-dirty research that I do, I seem to find something fascinating about many of the artists I write about. The most fascinating thing I have found is that many of these artists are actually quite respectable. One blog topic that didn't make it to this series, because none of the covers were sufficiently crappy, was a blog entry with a list of videos of people's artistic impressions (and otherwise) of the song "Stuart" by The Dead Milkmen. http://strider01.wordpress.com/2008/08/11/stuart-by-the-dead-milkmen-a-video-gallery/ Don't expect a great deal of professionalism from these creators. But when you scroll down, there is a video (probably a bootleg) of The Dead Milkmen performing it themselves. And, of course, the audience seems to know all the words. For me, it is reminiscent of The Northern Pikes, and The Grapes of Wrath (also good bands back in the 80s).
