There are always exceptions. Hurray for those. The book deals in patterns and commonalities among different groups of people, and how we teach those people--their children--most effectively. I went to a seminar my last semester of student teaching that was requiired attendance--a diverstity conference held at a very non-diverse "black" college. I pointed that out on the comment card at the end. Also I said in my last post, "whom I know nothing of as far as demographically." I didn't at first. That info was provided later. As far as a limited sample set, I base it on my observations of spending extended amounts of time in the Detroit/Flint area, Maryland DC area, all over the southeast, and most recently, LA. The Payne book did wonders for me in opening my eyes to why certain behaviors were occuring and how to deal with them. I, from the book's perspective am a heterogenous mix of both poverty and middle class mindsets. Mom and I struggling for so many years developed some poverty mentality in us--survival mode. A sample of differences between classes are with food. In the poverty mindset, quantity is important ("Did you get enough?) In the middle class mentality, quality is important ("Did you enjoy it?") In the wealth mentality, presentation is important (Did you like the way they presented the dessert?") In the poverty mentality, you are a citizen of yourtown, USA. In the middle class mentality, you are a citizen of the USA, and in the wealth mentality, you are a citizen of the world ("My favorite cafe is in Paris"). I liked the test in the book for how you'd fare in all three worlds. In the poverty mentality, you know how not to make sure your clothes don't get stolen at the laundromat, can use a knife for scissors, know where the best restaurants throw out their food, know what troubles to look for in a used car, how to move in one day--the wealth mentality--you know the hidden rules of the Junior League, have at least two "screens" to keep out unwanted people, etc. I had a summer seminar on the book last summer, but the seminar was based on the book, but the book wasn't required, as it was a day long seminar touching on key points. I finally read the book two months ago. Before you discipline Johnny for not bringing school supplies to school, remember Johnny is in poverty, and his dad has to choose between food for the family last night or a Mead binder. Cut him some slack. Good stuff. - --Mark **************Get fantasy football with free live scoring. Sign up for FanHouse Fantasy Football today.
