In reverse order, they are: 6 5 4 3 2 1 (with more to come) There is a lot on such covers on the 'net, but not much commentary. I have decided to say a little bit about each one, including some background info on the artist when it is available. My writing predictably pokes fun at the artist's expense, but I try to also find something positive about the artist to balance things out. This was difficult, as info was hard to find, and I was just relying on the Internet (my efforts are not part of a commercial enterprise -- it's just my own amusement). My writing covers all possible genres from classical to hip-hop to spoken word. Millie Jackson's infamous "Back to the S**t" is skewered on one of these blogs (I think it was link #4), as are albums from artists ranging from Dick Hyman to Tony Tee. Have fun. I haven't enjoyed much of his solo work, but he covers a lot of interesting ground with this one. There are a number of songs that remind me a bit of Richie Havens or Terry Reid -- folky soul stuff that works really well. There are the usual mod/power pop songs, which are pretty consistant. There are a number of experimental tracks --strange instrumentals (including a tribute to Alice Coltrane), spoken word, sound collages -- all of which are really good and do bring an effective dream-like flow to the album. My favorite tracks, though, are kind of jazzy and lush -- easy listening strings, harps and glockenspiels -- very David Axelrod-sounding and really wonderful. I do wish Weller could pen a decent lyric, though -- it's distracting at times. But overally, a 21 songs album (apparently the 22nd dream is a story written in the liner notes -- I only have a promo copy currently) that flows, is engaging and covers a lot of interesting ground in a really interesting way. Very cool. B PS Hey DMW, if you're around -- drop me a line! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Jul 2008 10:46:54 -0700 From: PunkRok Subject: [loud-fans] Recommended listening So I went to my favorite local indie record store yesterday and picked up the new Earlimart, the Fleet Foxes (which I had a burnt copy of and loved enough to actually purchase one - gotta support the band, I figure) and the new Bonnie "Prince" Billy. All are good stuff, of what I have been able to listen to. However, I also picked up the new Fratellis. You might recognize them from their iPod commercial last year. In any event, the first three songs on their new album "Here We Stand" make up the best opening to any disc I have listened to so far in 2008. The rest of the album is "ok" but those first three songs are worth the purchase alone, IMHO :) Check it out, folks :) PunkGirl ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Jul 2008 12:01:31 -0700 From: "Steve Holtebeck" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] At the half, so sayeth the Voice From The Cloud On Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 5:34 AM, Steve Schiavo wrote: > On Jul 23, 2008, at 9:52 PM, Andrew Hamlin wrote: > >> Matthew Sweet > > I saw Matthew Sweet's SUNSHINE LIES on emusic's new releases earlier this week, and was going to grab it after my downloads refreshed, but it's disappeared now, and the link above is also 404. Was there an early digital release? Or did emusic jump the gun? At any rate, I really liked those three songs Steve linked to. The first time I've been excited about one of Sweet's releases in a while. I've been enjoying Fleet Foxes that other folks have mentioned. The new Wolf Parade is more consistent, but doesn't quite match the first half of their previous album. And while I think I still like Vampire Weekend, I highly recommend you think twice before playing it around kids, else you could be forced to hear them sing "Blake's!! Got a new face!" a hundred times a day. At least I skipped the Oxford comma. LOL! Well, fortunately your taste for less twee fare doesn't involve bands like Lamb of God. Imagine Cookie Monster with a Manson swastika (sewn?) into his forehead and glowing red eyes, screaming about his sweet, Satanically good cookies, backed musically by guys that magic-markered Metallica logos on the top of their blue canvas binders in middle school, and made every midnight showing of FACES OF DEATH in their town, and you've got LOG. - --Mark (July 25) - Former NASA astronaut Dr. Edgar Mitchell told a British radio host this week that governments have been covering up contact with aliens for more than six decades, _The Daily Telegraph_ (http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,,24069817-5001021,00.html) reported.
