Its odd, because he's just about the only "cited by tons of other musicians as an influence" artist that I never previous took the time to seek out. Well, its time to seek him out. I've read a bunch of different information about which albums to get (short answer: All of Them), but does anyone here have some tips about where to best start an exploration of Parson's work, both with his bands and solo? Thanks! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jul 2008 07:29:12 -0400 From: Michael Zwirn Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Gram Parsons I would just buy the single-disc reissue of the two albums GP and Grievous Angel, although there are loads of re-compliled releases available, including a bunch of various assemblages from Rhino in the past few years: The best seems to be Sacred Hearts and Fallen Angels: The Gram Parsons Anthology. I'd say the Burritos' GILDED PALACE OF SIN: it probably has more well-known Parsons songs than any other album. - Dan ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jul 2008 09:38:54 -0400 From: "outbound-only email address" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Symphonic Scott and such Tim: >> I arranged and recorded a chamber version (recorders & viols) of "Just Gone" for the list tribute album that never happened, several years ago. << For what it's worth, I still feel bad that it never (yet) happened, and I still have all the cassettes, CDRs and files...somewhere. Hopefully within a couple months things may change so that I can make progress on some of the long-in-the-tooth studio projects, of which that is one of the longest-toothed. Maybe I could just put it on the internets so anyone can download it, if everyone involved would be cool with that. Assuming I can find everyone involved at this point. It's a dead issue at the moment, as the so-called studio is currently non-functional. * I think a chamber music version of some of Scott's songs could be really cool or it could be really dreadful. It all depends on the arrangements -- I think the trick would be in finding a gifted chamber music arranger who likes Scott's songs enough to add the required harmonic interest while remaining true to their essential cores. Which sounds like it could be a tall order. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jul 2008 07:26:31 -0700 From: "Steve Holtebeck" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Gram Parsons On 7/11/08, Michael Zwirn wrote: > I would just buy the single-disc reissue of the two albums GP and > Grievous Angel, although there are loads of re-compliled releases > available, including a bunch of various assemblages from Rhino in the > past few years: > > The best seems to be Sacred Hearts and Fallen Angels: The Gram > Parsons Anthology. The SACRED HEARTS two-disc collection has as good an approximation of "All of them" as any other GP album, with nearly all his best International Submarine Band, Byrds, Burritos, and solo songs. My favorite piece of Gram Parsons trivia, that I discovered just last week, was that Gram died just one day before Jim Croce died. - -Steve ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jul 2008 08:51:34 -0700 (GMT-07:00) From: treesprite@earthlink.net Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Gram Parsons The Flying Burrito Brothers' _Gilded Palace Of Sin_ and The Byrds' _Sweetheart of the Rodeo_ are the two that show Parsons at his best. I used to love the solo records, but they don't sound that great to me now -- some wonderful songwriting, though. I've always had a hard time really trying to find the seeds of his influence -- sometimes I think he became a huge influence merely by being _called_ a huge influence as a result of his dramatic story. There were lots and lots of people doing what we did when he did it -- I think that strain of pop music was going to exist regardless of what he did. Whatever the case, there is some fantastic stuff to explore. I say start with Gilded Palace of Sin -- it's one of the finest record so fthe 60's. My favorites are "Drug Store Truck Driving Man" and "Oooo Las Vegas", both of which have some awesome harmonies by Emmylou Harris. Truthfully, I didn't love Emmylou until I heard her on Parson's stuff - her voice has such a sweet, but haunting quality on those recordings . . . love it :) On 7/11/08, Markwstaples@aol.com wrote: > In a message dated 7/11/2008 10:29:37 A.M. That is, I deeply cherish this "Inverness" and I hope you all do too. I only crumpledly recall the attempt at a second Scott tribute album. Anyone remember how/why it ran out of steam? Is the completed and released one still available anywhere? Also, I'm curious--if you had trouble singing "Just Gone," Tim, why not call in one of the "Inverness" singers? Something else strange for a Scottlist--Rundgren's new one, no discussion at all... That sort of thing is definitely not a break-even type proposition. Of course, that was before MP3s came into their own. If I were doing one today, it would be a download-only type deal. I'm sure there are copies to be had out there. They've even turned up on eBay et al from time to time. I'm sure someone would be willing to dupe it for you, though I'm out of the business. But Andy, I thought you already had one? Did you sell it when times were tough? Well, the only singers on "Inverness" are me and Jenine, and I hadn't started working with her at that point. But yes, I could have found an actual singer easily enough. Not sure why I didn't. - -- Tim Walters | http://doubtfulpalace.com ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V7 #444 *******************************
