So yeah, it's a lot of fun. Haven't heard Sloan or some of the other loudfan-rated discs.) . Able Baker Fox - Voices This is a noisy emo/indie band, supergroup of sorts from Casket Lottery and Small Brown Bike. If you don't like this sort of thing in general you probably woudln't like it, but I think it's a remarkably consistent record. My favorite tracks are half of them. Big Dipper - Supercluster Reissue of the decade? Even a few of the previously unreleased tracks are kinda awesome. Capstan Shafts - Miles Per Famine Capstan Shafts - Fixation Protocol (not out yet, but a virtually lock based on the previews available at myspam) Cloud Cult - Feel Good Ghosts Foals - Antidotes Surprised no one else has mentioned either of these... Hands on Heads - Hands on Heads I think I wrote about this at the quarter year mark. Hissy, twitchy, trebly post-punk. You can tell they love early Wire for sure. Hello Dragon - Quantum Explorers New band from Helicopter Helicopter's songwriter/singers. An album I think lots of you folks might really like. Veda Hille - This Riot Life Ho-Ag - Doctor Cowboy Noisy mathy post-punk punks finally make a record that sounds like it came out of a real studio. Little Champions - Fire let me in, Loava let me out The cheap and easy comparison is to Versus, another disc I perceive as potentially loudfan friendly. Los Campesinos! - Hold On Now, Youngers The Magnetic Fields - Distortion The Mountain Goats - Heretic Pride Sons and Daughters - This Gift Times New Viking - Rip It Off We Versus the Shark - Murmurmur I like the new "real" album too, but I haven't digested it yet. But this 1-cover/month project has won me over already. I hope the recent line up change doesn't derail it. The Wire namedrop got me to go listen to this, and mostly it made me shrug-- I agree with the eMusic commenter who said they sounded more like the Cardiacs. But! The last track is totally different... frayed, lurching pop music without the spazziness. I mean, it sounds like a Maximo Park demo, but that's fine with me. The songs on their myspace page seem to point in the latter direction, too. Re: sounding like early Wire, have you heard These New Puritans? Stream of their best (10-minute) song: http://www.prefixmag.com/news/track-review-these-new-puritans-navigate-navigate/10593/ Video for "Swords Of Truth": http://youtube.com/watch?v=alrMLt5sGUM They also have a substantial debt to the Fall (sadly, including the singer maltreating the rest of the band onstage), but the Wire elements are there-- the album has one track with an unexpected bridge that sounds oddly like "Outdoor Miner". a ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 02 Jul 2008 17:21:41 -0400 From: "Stewart Mason" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] At the half - ----- Original Message ----- From: "outbound-only email address" > Capstan Shafts - Fixation Protocol (not out yet, but a virtually > lock > based on the previews available at myspam) It is indeed a goodie. Many more freebies are available around the internets, including a quartet of excellent EPs from last year.
