It's not a disaster or anything, but it just didn't seem as fully baked to me as THICK. And despite the fact (gleaned from Andy's link) that THICK was supposed to be the goofy one and APP the serious one, I find THICK to be much more haunting and evocative. APP had lots of good bits, but also kept feeding me corndogs (the key change on "a different key", "a young horse named George", "Hare" of course, the rather dated synth sounds on side two, etc.) Still, well worth a listen, so I withdraw it from the epic fail sweepstakes. Andrew, my first impression of the Kate Rusby album is that it's beautiful but a bit same-y. That exactly the sort of diagnosis that might improve with repeated hearings, though. - -- Tim Walters | The Doubtful Palace | http://doubtfulpalace.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jun 2008 08:41:14 -0400 From: "outbound-only email address" Subject: [loud-fans] do you miss helicopter helicopter? i know i wasn't the only loudfan to dig "by starlight" and "wild dogs with x-ray eyes".. Songwriter/guitarist/singers Chris Zerby and Julie Chadwick of Helicopter Helicopter have had a new project for a while with the really kinda dreadful name "Hello Dragon" Their new album "Quantum Explorers" is newly on eMusic, seems likely to appeal to fans of the old band, and you can sample a pretty good chunk of it on myspam (although not my favorite so far song "Garcia Marquez") ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jun 2008 08:15:48 -0700 (PDT) From: robert toren Subject: Subject: Re: [loud-fans] What It Was From: Gil Ray Subject: Re: [loud-fans] What It Was >>He did scrawl >>some stupid graffiti on our van (on the uber-layer of >>dirt), but Gui(?) responded in kind. I've always been a fan of Ed Hall's creepy cover of Kiss's Beth (retitled "Sandra Gubernatorial") -- except they change "Beth" to "Death". Just a few more hours And I'll be right home to you I think I hear them calling Oh Death what can I do? Ed Hall was a an under-rated Texas psych band a la B-Hole Surfers, worth checking out if thats your thing. It wasn't till I heard the interview with Ian (or was it the liner notes?) that I realized THICK was supposed to be the parody of a concept album, and PLAY was supposed to be the serious one. They both seem about equal parts earnest and goofy to me, which is one of the things I liked about Tull in the first place. Then again, he denied that AQUALUNG was a concept album -- said it was just a bunch of songs. A tough sell when you start giving the A and B sides their own little titles, IMO...
