Given Ms. Mann's penchant for dropping f-bombs in her songs (not that there's anything wrong with that), I have been pronouncing it "Fucking Smilers" but in mixed company I suppose one should say "Effing Smilers", or "Freaking Smilers" or if you're a Battlestar Galactica fan, "Frakking Smilers". You know, I took a look at the album title, and I'm sorry to get so nitpicky, but this is my brain on words: The title is "@#%&*! Smilers". One would think that the characters are standing in for "fuck" or "fucking", but there are only six characters -- that's two too many for "fuck", and one too few for "fucking". (Hmmm... one too few for fucking... there's a dilemma that's been plaguing me of late.) Even if you were to assume the more colloquial "fuckin' ", where's the apostrophe? Therefore, I am forced to conclude that the only rational translation is "Fucked Smilers". Which may very well be entirely appropriate: perhaps the album is a collection of songs about people who are smiling despite having been fucked, or who are smiling without knowing that a fucked condition is imminent. I thought about this for 45 minutes. Why am I such a @#%&*!$ dork? Or, why am I such a fucking @#%& ? I'm wondering if anyone here can give me tips on record shops, venues, restaurants, museums/galleries etc. in these regions. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I do not go wild in record store and clear them out, I promise, particularly with the US dollar so completely worthless. I saw Aimee telling the story behind this title at Greg Proops' live talk show (the best bang for your Los Angeles entertainment buck, I am convinced, by the way), and I can report that she pronounced it "Fuckin' Smilers." Sadly, I cannot rationalize the character count.
