My latest additions to my 2008 candidate list: Frightened Rabbit: The Midnight Organ Fight (elegantly sad and quietly glorious, like maybe a cross between the Frames and Idlewild) M83: Saturdays = Youth (best 80s synth-pop album since, I dunno, My Favorite?) Delays: Everything's the Rush (huge, giddy, guitar-and-falsetto sugar-rush pop, like you started with Oasis without the ego, or the Goo Goo Dolls without the sentiment, and then suddenly fell in love with everything) I Nine: Heavy Weighs the King (shamelessly Avril-Lavigne/Corrs-as-TV-soundtrack pop, but about as good, in my opinion, as that stuff gets) Trinacria: Travel Now Journey Infinitely (Viking-metal plus art-noise, easily the most bracing thing I've heard all year) Runrig: Year of the Flood (the band responsible for my favorite live album of all time does another live album...) Still pondering: Kaia, Moonspell, Boris. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 May 2008 11:27:11 -0400 From: "Michael Bowen" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] My notes on the first third (and yours?) Is that Delays album available in the states, or are there plans to release it soon? I loved their first album and liked the second (bought, sadly, at the last day of a Tower Records close-out). I haven't seen a physical copy in person yet, and don't know whether a US release is planned. In the meantime, if you want to sample the music contained therein as part of your buying decision-process, you could try one of these: http://rapidshare.com/files/114531746/The_Delays_-_Everything_s_The_Rush.rar http://www.mininova.org/tor/1411036 On Fri, May 23, 2008 at 11:27 AM, Michael Bowen wrote: > Is that Delays album available in the states, or are there plans to > release it soon? > > I loved their first album and liked the second (bought, sadly, at the > last day of a Tower Records close-out). > > MB ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 May 2008 16:51:42 EDT From: Markwstaples@aol.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] My notes on the first third (and yours?) I just sadly got news from a stranger on MySpace who was looking for more information about someone I'd mentioned on list before, Ronnie Estes, who has died--he saw an obituary, and wanted to know details, saying he'd been living overseas. I told him I knew nothing of his passing. I know nobody here knows who he is--as soon as he was able to he split for CA and left Greentown, SC far behind in about 1990, but he was a good friend of mine for many years. He took me under his wing at age 15 (he 17--working at the local Record Bar wearing suspenders with his fave bands on 'em--The English Beat and Costello buttons come to mind). I came in to Record Bar to buy MESOPOTAMIA on vinyl I think it was, and we hit it off, sharing our mutual Greenville alienation--he was two years ahead of me at Wade Hampton High School--then later him working at the only good record store we had here which stll exists--Horizon Records--me hanging out and learning from him and laughing and enjoying music with him every Sunday afternoon. He taught me what good music was/is--he saw the interest in me as a kid and saw where my tastes leaned, and, like a Montessori teacher, he nurtured them and showed me a whole other world beyond the top 40. He turned me on to my favorite album of all time, BIG SHOT CHRONICLES, telling me I must hear it, back when it was a new release, so, he's a Loudfan. He flipped over LOLITA NATION, demanding that I must have it immediately when it came in the store, and I remember telling him I was broke, and he bought the tape of it for me, telling me I could pay him back later. I replaced it (the pad came out--quelle surprise with Enigma tapes) with one of my first CDs (I think it was my 3rd purchase, LN on CD). I've been thinking how much I owe to him. I probably wouldn't ever have made it here (love me or hate me), I wouldn't be a DJ at WNCW--I owe him so much, and now he's gone. I'd heard rumors of heroin, but I don't know. I do know that I'm sad, and I regret losing touch with him when he moved to CA--but, that was before the internet and long distance phone calls were a luxury item. I guess the point of my post is this--think of the people that have influenced you, living or dead, and never forget them--always treasure them. - --Mark **************Get trade secrets for amazing burgers.
