["Andrew Hamlin" Subject: [loud-fans] another recommendation for you to ignore: little champions I loved Little Champions' 2001 release Transactions+Replications (on Barsuk) and I'm delighted to learn they're still a going proposition. New one is "Fire let me in, lava let me out" (available from Barsuk, easily previewable on Last.FM or MySpam). lots of hooky bits, jagged bits, interlocking guitars, coed vocals, songs that don't sound alike -- all that stuff I dig. Maybe a little less determinedly odd than the first record. instantly on the year's best shortlist. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 May 2008 09:13:10 EDT From: JRT456@aol.com Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Re: Stew! A screen version would be more likely, but "Passing Strange" hasn't really found a Broadway audience yet. Those Tony nominations were a blessing. Nobody's mentioned it here, but Adam Schlesinger is also represented at this year's Tony Awards with "Cry-Baby." It's not nearly as good as "Passing Strange." ************** Wondering what's for Dinner Tonight? Get new twists on family favorites at AOL Food. While at the record store I noticed they had the new Jonathan Richman album on sale, and they had printed up a divider card reading "BECAUSE HER BEAUTY IS RAW 11.99." It's actually BECAUSE HER BEAUTY IS RAW AND WILD. I thought the man had finally gone over the edge completely and was recording with 50 Cent or something. On a related note, I got a good laugh on the way to work early in the school year for about a week or so, as a private bar and grill had a sign out by the road that read "BARBARA IS BACK WITH MEAT 5.99." About a week later, in red letters, they added and crammed into a tight space on the sign "& 3." My favorite albums from the first third of the year: 13TH STAR by Fish, JUKEBOX by Cat Power, PWRFL POWER by PWRFL POWER, and BREAK by Dawn Clement, in roughly that order. I don't have AWKWARD ANNIE by Kate Rusby yet, but it's on my list. The Scarlett Johannson disc sounds fascinating from the Amazon samples. I'm getting into Sara Gazarek's RETURN TO YOU, but that's from 2007, alas. Maybe I'll give the new Charles Lloyd a listen... Other people's thoughts?
