The first details for the 38th Annual Bumbershoot: Seattle's Music & Arts Festival, Presented by Samsung Mobile, have been announced! The full lineup won't be revealed until later in the summer, but this sneak peek gives you a glimpse at what's coming your way over Labor Day Weekend (August 30September 1) at Seattle Center. The lineup for this year includes: *MUSIC* *Beck, Stone Temple Pilots, Lucinda Williams, Neko Case, Ingrid Michaelson, Del Tha Funky Homosapien, Jakob Dylan, !!!, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Saul Williams, Joe Bonamassa, M. Ward, The Walkmen, Asylum St. Spankers, Dan Deacon, MIDIval PunditZ, Blitzen Trapper, Bedouin Soundclash, Tim Finn, Dale Watson, John Vanderslice, Final Fantasy, The Fall of Troy, Orgone, Forro in the Dark, Ryan Bingham, Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby, Arthur & Yu, Darondo and Nino Moschella, Pacifika* and many more to be announced. Of course, the Festival features much more than musicit's home to 20 unique venues and a full range of arts including *comedy*, *regional theatre*(co-curated by Theatre Puget Sound), the *1 Reel Film Festival* (curated by the Seattle International Film Festival), *Flatstock*, the *Indie Market*, and the ever popular *Literary*, * Performance*, and *Visual Arts* programs. *LITERARY ARTS* This year's Literary Arts program welcomes graphic novelists *Dan Clowes*and *Adrian Tomine*, sci-fi legend *William Gibson*, a special edition of *Starlee Kine and Arthur Jones' Post-It Note Reading Series*, authors *Nathan McCall*, *Francesca Lia-Block*, *Kevin Sessums*, and more. *VISUAL ARTS* The Visual Arts' exhibits will showcase the *Gage Academy's Drawing Jam*(giving attendees a taste of the classical art studio); *"The Power of One,"* a monumental photo and multimedia exhibit that explores the ways individuals make an impact in society (be it war, peace, environment, etc) curated by Marita Holdaway of Benham Gallery; a collection of local and national contemporary video work from *The Henry Art Gallery*(including work by performance artists *Grand Openings* from New York); a special *"One Pot"* residency and exhibit from food adventurer Michael Hebberoy; and *The Seattle-Tehran Poster Show*(a reprisal of last year's hit Seattle-Havana Poster Show that's now installed in the National Gallery in Havana). *SPECTACLE & INSTALLATION* The Festival's penchant for playful performance continues with *Strange Fruit*, a performing arts company that hails from Melbourne, Australia, fusing theatre, dance and circus, perched atop 12-foot poles. A bit closer to home (and the ground) will be an outdoor table as part of the *One Pot*residency, and site-specific installations by regional artists. *DANCE & PERFORMANCE* Bumbershoot is proud to present a brand new collaboration between San Francisco-based choreographer *Joe Goode* and New York-based puppeteer *Basil Twist*. The performance, called "Wonderboy," features a distinctive blend of dance and theatre; it debuts this summer at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Performing Arts and then travels to Bumbershoot. Also on the program are performances from the *Pacific Northwest Ballet* and a slate of regional and national performance companies. *COMEDY* When we expanded our comedy program to three stages last year, we wondered if we were crazy. Apparently notall three venues, including the new Northwest comedy stage at the Vera Project, were huge crowd favorites, each featuring the freshest comedians from around the nation and here at home. The three stages will return in 2008 with a complete comic lineup to be announced this summer. *TICKETS* If you slept through the BumberFan Insider Deal on 3-day passes, that's OK! I always dug STP's singles and their Greatest Hits Collection is worth having. Their albums were always a mixed bag, but, damn, their singles were generally awesome. I never quite got the critical vilification they received. So, anyhow, STP wouldn't keep me away from a concert. Large crowds of sweaty people do that just fine. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Apr 2008 17:04:25 -0700 From: "Michael Mitton" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] ...and that's the horn for the end of the first I'd echo support for Ida's "Lovers Prayers", the Mountain Goats's "Heretic Pride", and Vampire Weekend's "S/T". But I'll also add support for Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, "Real Emotional Trash" and especially Kathleen Edwards, "Asking for Flowers." I really liked her first, disliked her second, and this album I think is her best: "Don't tell me you're too tired/Ten years I've been working nights." mm On Mon, Apr 7, 2008 at 5:43 PM, glenn mcdonald wrote: > I endorse these 2008 new releases, at least: > > Asian Kung-Fu Generation: World World World (BUMP OF CHICKEN-style > Japanese rock) > Garnet Crow: LOCKS (cinematic Japanese pop) > Ida: Lovers Prayers (hushed) > Bob Mould: District Line (classic) > Mountain Goats: Heretic Pride (harrowing and elegant) > Zapruder Point: Soda & Sympathy (quiet and honest) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Apr 2008 17:09:36 -0700 From: PunkRok Subject: Re: [loud-fans] Fwd: Bumbershoot 2008 sneak peek lineup is here! I can agree that STP is a boo-fest, but have any of you seen the cool marionette thing that Beck is doing on this tour? And the previous stuff he did with the mic'd table and drumming on dinnerware was pretty cool as well. Plus, Seattle is gorgeous that time of year . . . I went last year and really enjoyed it - it is a much smaller festival than Coachella and VooDoo fest, but the atmosphere and the fact that you can ride their monorail to and from the festival makes it much easier. Plus, they have some cool vendors and good local bands. I bought a messenger bag made out of used (and bleached and cleaned) chopsticks! Leave it to Seattle to re-use and re-cycle in such creative ways! On 4/9/08, Steve Holtebeck wrote: > > > Oooh, Stone Temple Pilots! How could I pass that up? > > > > I hear ya. STP were the Grand Funk Railroad of their day - dumb lyrics and lowest-common-denominator music. It's not like Lolla or that sort of festival, with a huge field and a couple of stages. It's spread out over the whole Seattle Center complex, with numerous stages of various sizes, many of them outdoors. You only get a large group of sweaty people for some of the bands in the soccer stadium, and even then you can just shop the booths or get some food in the back of the stadium, away from the crowd, and still watch and listen to the music. I don't do the big festival things in general, but I've been to Bumber many times and find it generally comfortable. So, that's my new 2008 album discovery. They're a retro band, but with smart songwriting and interesting arrangements. This album is less Stones-y R&B style, and more psych.
