But Goldfrapp's SEVENTH TREE will definitely be top ten for me, and possibly #1. I'm usually (notoriously?) down on midtempo-dominated albums, and this one is definitely more melancholy, pastoral, and ruminative than BLACK CHERRY or SUPERNATURE, and it's more introspective than FELT MOUNTAIN. But like Beck's MUTATIONS, another melancholy venture that I love (and still my favorite Beck product): 1) Every song is exquisitely, imaginitively crafted. 2) There's enough variety in the arrangements to keep it interesting. 2) It doesn't wear out its welcome - ten songs at traditional album length, and it's outta there. Of course, I *would* like anything Goldfrapp, so apply a good measure of salt there. The only other things that come to mind that I own which could possibly count for 2008 could be counted for 2007 with no argument from me: * Radiohead, IN RAINBOWS, which anyone could have had digitally for free in 2007. Yeah, I was goofy and waited for the "official" physical disk. It is a highly enjoyable album, and might be a top 10 for me when it's all said 'n' done. * Kylie Minogue, X, out yesterday here in the US, but has been available in the rest of the world since last fall. Plus it's only got about three good songs, so I'll be surprised if it ends up very high on my list. I did finally get Plant/Krass and like it, though not as much as most everyone else, and I've picked up the Plant reissues from 2007 (2006 if you count the box set) and have been groovin' on them for 'bout a month. It is supposed to run on Friday night (Saturday morning--there's been a fundraiser this week so there IS a slight chance it'll get pushed back if Joe Kendrick the ARC Overnight coordinator hasn't had a chance to run through the discs with the editing software). I played GT's "The Waist & the Knees" and LF's "Idiot Son" (a good springtime kind of song to me). I ramble on a bit too much here and there in breaks (Who me? Naw) because I was rusty/nervous after not doing it for 7 months, but I think it should be a pleasant listen. You'll never hear Visage's "Fade to Grey" played with Bobbie Gentry's "Ode to Bille Joe" in the same show anywhere else. - --Mark **************Planning your summer road trip? Mixed feelings on the new REM after one listen--I hear some promising moments. Those first three songs are really fun and fantastic. My favorite so far this year, though, is that new American Music Club album, The Golden Age. It's really wonderful--by far the most melodically rich album they've made and there's very little of the angst-y stuff. It almost sounds like they've married their moody, slow style to some 70's AM radio stuff with lots of beautiful harmonies and shiny acoustic guitars. Even if you've never liked them before, I recommend checking this one out. Also, i've had burns of the last two Statuesque albums for years, but they've really only been made available this year on eMusic. Calling Nature's Bluff is my favorite of the two. I'm very excited about the upcoming Robert Forster solo album and the new Mariah Carey. B ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V7 #365 *******************************
