I am not yet breaking punk up into 'proto punk' and 'post punk', etc, so it is all punk to me. I recently bought the Replacements first release (recommended to me by local punk dude). He also recommended the first Husker Du release. I'm quite familiar both of those artists later releases, which I listened to the first time around. I love Double Nickels on the Dime. The only other Minutemen release I'm familiar with is Project Mersh. Are earlier ones worth checking out? Also thanks for the compilation suggestions. I didn't think of artists like Mission of Burma or Television as punk! But then, it wasn't just about the music, was it? The Minutemen hold up very well, much more so than a lot of bands of their time and place. The band doc WE JAM ECONO is pretty great too. Is that the SORRY MA, FORGOT TO TAKE OUT THE TRASH or LET IT BE ? If memory serves, the former was the first, but it got re-released later, after they got a strong following. I think the cover art to LET IT BE is fantastic and timeless, as simple as it is. - --Mark **************Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music. So it was far from being their first. I think the Replacements are the band I like the most that I've said the most against over the years. I just can't stand the veneration of their unprofessionalism and spottiness, and for me personally, they were never "the last great rock band" - there were always contemporaries I loved far more. But yeah, when they were good, they were very very good. PLEASED TO MEET ME is still the only one I like all the way through, but there's enough brilliance on LET IT BE, TIM, and HOOTENANNY to make them all worthwhile. Everything by the Minutemen is worthwhile, though you might want to save BALLOT RESULT for last 'cos of the bootleg quality of a lot of the audio. They were gonna cut a whole new live album with the fan-chosen winners, but the van wreck that took the life of d. Boon happened before the band could do that. later, Miles ------------------------------ End of loud-fans-digest V7 #326 *******************************
