Samson, is now the leader of the Weakerthans, whose most recent album REUNION TOUR was in my Top 3 of 2007 and one many days is my #1 of the year. His wife Christine Fellows is equally awesome in an entirely different style.>> Oh, the Weakerthans are great. Not punk, though, just to be clear -- some punk influence, but as much influence from alt-rock, folk, country, and the Rheostatics. And some punk defiance, but more empathy, resignation, and sheepishness, with subtle touches of whimsy. If you like the Weakerthans, their Winnipeg scene-mates the Paperbacks are remarkably similar, and similarly gifted. Their songwriter, Doug McLean, also led the Bonaduces, whose sole album THE DEMOCRACY OF SLEEP sounds like an album of lost Weakerthans songs if recorded by Husker Du or something. I knew Samson and Fellows worked together, but didn't know they were married. The news makes me happy for some reason, so yay.
