I have been and plan on going, particularly if the Verve is anywhere on the list. My question is this - does anyone have any connections that can hook me up with a photo or press pass? I don't want to meet any of the bands or anything even remotely groupie-rific. I just really want to be able to take my dSLR with me and get some cool shots for my blog :) According to GV they will give out passes to folks tied to "real" media outlets - not sure what they constitute as real, but if anyone has any thoughts on how I can pull this off, I am all ears :) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Jan 2008 14:30:34 -0500 From: "glenn mcdonald" Subject: [loud-fans] Re: 2007 LoudFans Poll Results Here's how the LF top three fared in the Idolator poll: Mitch Easter: 0 votes. The statements that it is like Magnetic Fields through the lens of the Jesus and Mary Chain are apt. I kept flashing on the Magnetic Fields track "When My Boy Walks Down The Street" listening to it. As always, several stand out songs, notably "California Girls," which had me flashing on J&MC's "Kill Surf City." Its funny, I just iTuned The Beat Happening's "You Turn Me On" the other day. I was not exposed to The Beat Happening but sought them out after reading *Our Band Could be Your Life*. They really are very similar to Magnetic Fields in certain ways and, listening to the two albums back to back, the distortion was the only thing that help my untrained ear recognize that they were different artists. For a music blog you need to basically have archives that prove you're serious. Mitch whiffage for sure, but I make it #43 for the New Pornographers, two-way tie for #46 (with Rilo Kiley) on the Shins. Could glenn be slipping? We'll have to ask his daughter to keep careful notes. Surprising (upon reflection) how nobody stuck up for Mitch. I should note, though, that the web site leaves at least one album that one critic voted for--Warren Zevon's PRELUDES. I know because I voted for it. I'll alert the concerned parties. Maybe some Mitch votes got flubbed likewise. I think it's safe, though (unless you think it isn't) to generalize that critics pay more attention to newer artists on bigger and/or better known labels. I went over to the Village Voice site calling "halloo?" for Pazz & Jop. It didn't answer, but I found a neat article on a new Klaus Nomi album: http://www.villagevoice.com/music/0803,beghtol,78834,22.html ...and here's the man of the hour being the man of the hour: http://www.villagevoice.com/music/0803,trucks,78861,22.html Sadly, Amazon never heard of the Nomi. What blows my mind is that BARBED WIRE KISSES is turning 20 this year. And, not mind blowing, but welcome is the Bangles catalog has been reissued. I hope they "deColumbiafied" the liner sleeves and actually produced a proper liner sleeve with notes this time, especially for ALL OVER THE PLACE. I once had a friend tell me you could tell a newer Bangles album from an older one because, with every subsequent release, their makeup got heavier and their hair got bigger. If there'd been a fourth LP, they might've given Tammy Fae Baker a run for her money. I got YOU TURN ME ON the first go 'round, but I just never could get into Johnson's vocals--flatter and more off-key then Nico's. but she had her Germanic blonde chanteuseness to save her. But, I do respect him a great deal for giving the world K Records and putting out material from some great bands, like Tiger Trap and Heavenly.
