And you don't have to change burner software to turn .flacs into music CDs, you can download a program with which to convert them to .wav files, then burn the .wavs to disc. .flac files are good quality, not so compressed as mp3s. I use xACT (free, fine), although it converts to and from WAV rather than burning CDs directly. > Also, any thoughts on the relative quality of FLAC files. It's a lossless codec, so there's no difference between the FLAC file and the original audio. Think of it as working like a .zip archive (needed because compression algorithms developed for text and computer code don't work well for audio). - -- Tim Walters | The Doubtful Palace | http://doubtfulpalace.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jan 2008 00:12:47 -0800 From: "bradley skaught" Subject: Re: [loud-fans] FLAC files I had to buy a plug-in for my burning program (Nero) to transfer FLAC files to burnable audio. As noted by others, the sound quality of FLAC is exactly the same as the CD. But, you may still want to evaluate quality on the basis of the speed of compression/decompression, and the resulting file size. There's a trade off between speed and file size, and I think all the standard lossless codecs allow you to choose that trade off. Personally, I rip all of my CDs to FLAC using its standard setting. See more here: http://flac.sourceforge.net/comparison.html I don't understand why there is any software out there at all that won't handle FLAC. The libraries are open source and available on all platforms. It just can't be that hard to add support. I hadn't learned a programming language since Basic, but I picked up Python and in about two weeks had written a plug-in for Amarok (excellent Linux player, coming to Windows...) that uses the libraries to convert between half a dozen formats. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jan 2008 20:19:52 EST From: Scout82667@aol.com Subject: [loud-fans] 40th anniv. remixes I wanted to mention how good the Bruce Botnick Doors remixes are. I've been in a headphone listening phase of late (when I ever get the time to listen to music!) and those Doors remixes from last year are stunning (surround sound or not). One peeve of mine is how previous mixes had the drums on "Light My Fire" way off in the corner of the left channel--sounding like they were recorded on a Jetson's floating pedestal (early stereo is both charming and annoying--think RUBBER SOUL), and Botnick has radically improved the drums presence in the new mix, and the analog haze and hiss is practically gone. How'd they get rid of it? "Strange Days" sounds much better now--much. If they improve the Doors catalogue's sound quality any more, you'll be able to hear Morrison's leather pants rub together. - --Mark I've been thinking about you and so I'm sending you a hello. I had a dream about you last night. You put on a musical for some of us and you were really good. There were skits and dancing (something with a plunger and a train), It was insightful and artistically sound even though it was exceedingly weird. At the end, while I was congratulating you, you told me you had to leave and you were moving to Florida. Strange, right? (an e-mail from a high school friend who moved to Charlotte that I received today on MySpace) **************Start the year off right.
