I was rather amazed how many new things I'd managed to amass in 2007 with the usual range of delights and disappointments mixed in. Anyway, this is the current order with all the usual riders about how it would all be different if anyone asked next week.1. Buffalo Tom - 3 easy piecesThe highlight of the year of the great reunion/comeback. Nothing surprising, but everything you'd hope it would be.2. White Stripes - Icky ThumpThe best Zeppelin album since Physical Graffiti; just makes me thing of a cross between Zep 2 & 3, and for my money the best thing they've done.3. Clientele - God save the ClienteleI rather lost track of these folks after Suburban Light so the sheer beauty of this was a delightful surprise.4. Church - - El momento siguenteThe 1st acoustic album was a disappointment for me - just strumming their way through their back catalogue. This time they've elected to play around more with formats and styles with fabulous results. Reptile and Tantalized sound great done in ways totally removed from the original.5. Dinosaur Jr - BeyondGreat reunion #2. Again, no big surprises, it just does Dino Jr better than any Dino Jr album since You're Living All Over Me6. Joe Henry - CiviliansContinuing the flirtation with Waitsian stylings, but with a much smoother feel this is top quality stuff once more - though I still prefer Tiny Voices.7. Ryan Adams - Easy tigerWhen he concentrates he can put together a consistently damn good album.8. The Alice Rose - Phonographic MemoryDiscovered these guys on Garageband when I was reviewing. Great melodies, great harmonies, lovely instrumentation and song structures inspired by the 13th Floor Elevators, so you never quite know what is coming next. Wisteria is probably my favourite song of the year.9. Field Music - Tones of townThanks to folks on here for recommending this.10. Coral - Roots & echoesAnother quality release from the Scousers, although maybe not quite as consistent as The Invisible Invasion.11. Do the Undo - s/tTop quality Dutch pop from the former Daryll-Ann guitarist.12. Block Party - A weekend in the cityAt various times in the year this has been much higher. I can go through days of wanting to listen to nothing else, and weeks of completely forgetting about it, which probably says more about my listening habits that its quality.13. Peter. Bjorn & John - Writer's blockSome great stuff on here, but I just don't enjoy it as much as their earlier stuff (which I also got in 2007).14. Son Volt - The searchAnother return to form after a long time away (apart from the disappointing Okemah...).15. Shins - Wincing the night awayI was amazed to discover that this was a 2007 release - it seemed so long since I'd heard it!Here's looking forward to another great slew of releases this year.Richard Blatherwick ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Jan 2008 07:05:41 -0800 (PST) From: robert toren Subject: Re: Re: [loud-fans] Latest Ask Scott >> "I'm starting to think about doing an album again, but I'm pretty prepared for it to be one of those situations where when it actually comes out, a lot of people who thought they were going to care really don't because the community that used to be available to share the interest has moved on. Of course, there's the internet now, so you never know." >> he's realizing the YouTube/MySpace outlets could actually make a ripple for him--Scott could have a song or vid that could go viral on YouTube or MySpace--you never know. Generally, YouTube Game Theory videos get more hits than the Loud Family's (esp Erica's Word: 5,825 views, 35 5-star ratings, 106 Favorites) - maybe Scott should do a Game Theory album! or - re-record an acoustic The Big Shot Chronicles! Gil & Suzi are around - just need to drag Shelley off her chicken farm... Robert This is somewhat related to your post, but it struck me as amazing over Christmas break sitting in my brother's dining room in Moorpark, CA watching "Erica's Word" on his wireless Mac laptop on the dining room table just how far we've come in 20 years. Back then, I was dragging a needle through a groove to hear this song. Or, dragging a magnetic tape across a head. Now, I can travel anywhere, anytime and pull it up/WITH the video and watch it. That's mind blowing if you think about it. Two decades ago you'd have to wait and hope and pray that Dave Kendall would smile upon you and play it, so you could record it to your VHS cassette (on the "SP" setting for maximum resolution and clarity--lol) - --Mark "Without the courage of the fearless crew, the Minnow would be lost--and you are, too." Sorry for the late response! The new Verlaines album is currently a NZ only release. It came out mid-December on Flying Nun, but even Flying Nun's website still lists it as a rumor! I bought it through Smoke CDs, which is where I get most of my NZ imports. It's fantastic--maybe one of their best! It's the same line-up as Over The Moon (the other NZ only album), but there's not as much loud guitar stuff--it reminds me a bit of Bird Dog. The writing's fantastic and there are plenty of those little Graeme Downes orchestral touches. It's funny, there have been at least three really top notch albums that haven't made it out of NZ lately--The Verlaines, Don McGlashan and Humphreys & Keen. I'm happy with the burning software I have for Wav and MP3 files, but FLAC seems to be a growing format for music files. Also, any thoughts on the relative quality of FLAC files.
